Sliding-scale produce and a soul food kitchen in Ward 8

Ward 8 has been short of grocery stores for decades. Marion Barry Avenue Market, open since October 2025, is the response: sliding-scale produce from local growers, backed by Dreaming Out Loud and José Andrés' Longer Tables Fund.

The kitchen serves a soul food-leaning menu from breakfast through dinner. It functions as a cafe first and a political statement second, but it is clearly both.

Live what they offer... healthy, known and unknown...things I need to try. I ordered some items...the salad was fresh, the wings with mambo sauce were perfectly cooked. The salmon was too salty and oily bottom, rice hard and old and the broccoli also salty and oily...soaked through the container and the bag. Maybe a little wax paper or plastic on the bottom... otherwise I like the store and will be back.

Blind customer: the business is a little ways back from the curb. Once inside, make an immediate right to Walk towards the counter. I was greeted by a very kind young lady. She welcomed assisting me navigating store and picking up items. I purchased fresh produce, snacks, and grabbed a meal. I recommend the turkey sausage, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich. It was very tasty. I appreciate indoor and outdoor seating. Various staff came up to ensure I was having a pleasant experience. I highly value supporting small businesses in Southeast DC. I look forward to returning.

Had me at "Chocolate City Cake!" ✊🏽 This is transformative for the business corridor in Historic Anacostia and the greater Ward 8. New on Marion Barry Avenue is an inviting open market stocked with fresh produce, meats, and meals on the go. A befitting honor to DC's Mayor for Ever.

We came from philly and we were taken care of greatly. They have a great stay and great energy. They really care about their people and I am so happy me and my friends came here. This is a perfect place to stop by, make connections and grab something healthy and nutritious.

The convenience of having a miniature grocery store in the neighborhood is quite pleasing. However, the prices are a bit high and the café is limited, but delicious !Welcome to living east of the river.
