District Larder Co.
★ 4.7 · 45 reviews Washington, D.C. Opened June 2026
Deli by day, dinner from 5pm Thursday to Sunday
District Larder opened on Upshur Street in June 2026 as a deli and sandwich counter, which is what it stays until 5pm.
Thursday through Sunday evenings it turns into a different restaurant: roasted lamb, chicken and gravy, smoked trout fillet. Two menus, one small room.

New neighborhood sandwich, sausage, charcuterie, and drinks spot. House-made meats, real craft artisans. Unique pantry staples I usually have to go to specialty grocery stores for. I recommend the hotdog! Will become a regular here even though I'm not in the neighborhood. Cheers!

Here's a review for District Larder Company: District Larder Co. is exactly what Upshur Street needed. It's a real neighborhood deli, run by people who clearly know charcuterie and take it seriously, and it shows in every sandwich. The house-made salamis and cured meats put this place a level above your typical sandwich shop, and the staff are friendly in a way that makes you feel like a regular after one visit. The sandwiches are the draw, and they deliver. Everything is stacked generously, the bread holds up, and you can tell the meats are made in-house rather than sourced from a distributor. It's the kind of lunch spot where you start planning your next visit before you've finished the first one. Beyond the food, this is a business worth supporting. Small, independent spots like this are what make a neighborhood feel like a neighborhood, and Upshur Street is lucky to have it. Petworth needed a proper deli for years, and District Larder Co. filled that gap the right way. Go get a sandwich, tell your neighbors, and keep this one around.

Was originally a little skeptical because of the cost but the Italian is 100% worth it. The “small” is more of a regular size and the large is like an “XL.” 2 people with more easily satiable appetites could even split the small.

I came knowing that people think it’s good but a bit pricey. I’m leaving with a similar impression but I can also add: - the 8$ hot dogs and half smokes with cheese and chili are delicious and a great deal! - the vibe is really nice for a casual evening - service is exceptionally good I wish it leaned a bit more deli and less restaurant though (with more things to buy)

One of THE best dinner experiences I've had in DC in years and a welcome first meal after moving back. We had six friends in town from all over (NYC, Miami, Melbourn, and Chicago) and I wanted to treat everyone to the best DC has to offer without going to a tourist trap or overhyped spot that's all influencer and no substance. Some friends asked, "are we really eating dinner at a deli??" and I simply reminded them that I've never steered them wrong and to trust the process. And boy did District Lader deliver!! I've known and have followed Jason, the General Manager, for years across multiple places he has managed and trust anywhere he works because first, he knows the importance of quality service in both the front and back of the house, and second, he takes care of his staff and customers with equal grace and respect. So, I wasn't surprised that the service we received from all staff from the moment we arrived until we left was exceptional. We started our meal with some of the house ciabatta bread and seasoned butter: warm and soft centers with a perfect crust and were gifted some chicharrón's that were lite, crunchy and paired well with a smokey and not too spicy dipping sauce. Our first course was two of their Grand Royle charcutier boards since we wanted to sample chef Matt's labor of making all the meats in house using a whole animal approach. We had one friend of Jewish faith who couldn't eat pork, and Jason and chef Matt offered up some house made turkey and beef bologna to go with our boards, and everything was delicious. Some smokey and spicy and others perfectly savory with tasty fat marbling, the pates were to die for, and everything paired beautifully with the house-made pickles, cheeses, and sauces. Cocktails were also big winners with the house-smoked bacon fat Old Fashioned blowing us all away. Additionally, one friend is a feen for a good dirty martini and absolutely loved their version using the house pickle juice. Others raved about the red and white wines and beer choices, with all the cocktails being balanced and well-presented. Entrees did not falter either, with everyone doing a mix of different options from the chicken, to the pork schnitzel special to the beef and pasta. All dishes were perfectly plated with the right portions because you get two of their house-made sides with each entree and none of them were throw-away sides. The potato salad was a big hit, the simple green salad had one of the best dressings, and along with the roasted carrots my personal favorite was the marinated beets. My hope for this meal becoming a memory for everyone was a huge success. I love DC because you can find these gems scattered throughout the city and can easily miss out if you think everything good has to be gigantic, a beast to get into, or a tourist trap. The concept of District Lader being a grab and go sandwich shop during the day and bar/restaurant at night is not only smart, but it works balancing well-made food in a comfortable space. My friends and I can't thank Jason, chef Matt, and the entire team at District Lader enough for taking such good care of us last night, and I'm looking forward to may more meals at this this DC favorite.
