Marta Beimin's Polish bakery on Adelsgatan

Marta Beimin opened Babka Café in May 2024 at Adelsgatan 2, in a space that had previously housed an interior design shop, with outdoor seating facing Södertorg. Babka means "old woman" in Polish (the Russian equivalent is the more familiar "babushka"), and the name nods to the home baking Beimin had been sharing online for years before the café.

Beimin came to Visby in 2018 to visit her now-husband Mateusz Jagielski, who had a temporary chef's job on the island, and stayed. The café serves breakfast, lunch and a rotating case of her own pastries.

Fika was delicious. I loved the atmosphere but, to be fair, this was during their makeover so they were located at WisbyHof.

World class pastries in a medieval town, what else is there to say? The lemon poppy seed cake is to die for. The donuts heavenly. Oh and their soup!?! Nothing but incredible dishes here. I miss this weekend breakfast staple since leaving the island so much.

We were advised to try Babka and immediately fell in love. We happened to be here during renovations but even though the menu is reduced, everything we've tried has been perfect. Immaculate sandwiches on their own bread, amazing soup and every pastry is a masterpiece. They truly present the best side of polish bakery and cuisine, and combine it with local ingredients. Babka has quickly risen to be my favorite bakery ever and it will take a lot to change that.
