A French bistro run through a Japanese filter
French bistro classics get the Japanese treatment here: sharper knife work, a lighter hand on the butter, plates that feel trimmed rather than heavy. It works on a quiet lane off Ploenchit, the kind of street that rewards wandering.
Bangkok's embassy district has always had grand hotel dining rooms and street stalls, not much in between. Hippopotoshi at Woodberry Common on Soi Ruamrudee fills exactly that gap.

Nice space, but the food is not quite the innovative French-Japanese fusion cuisine that I was hoping. It’s more like a mixed menu of straight up French dishes like Poulet Roti, and Japanese dishes like Wagyu beef rice pot. Some dishes like the beef rice pot, salmon, and steak were very good. But there were also a lot of misses. The tuna steak had a briny fishy off smell that was unpleasant. We alerted this to the staff that it probably was not fresh but they insisted it was normal (although they didn’t take it back to the kitchen for the chef to check). The dango dessert was way too salty with soy sauce, which was not even listed as an ingredient. I say if you are going to have something unexpected in your dish it’s important to let the customers know before they order. Price on the menu looks very reasonable, until you find out that most of the dishes are small portions so you will need to order double to get regular size portion so in the end it’s slightly on the pricey side. This place needs a menu overhaul if they wish to attract more customers with their concept.

This is a truly stunning experience. The atmosphere and decor is tasteful yet fun. And this carries through every moment. A great happy hour, warm and generous service, amazing food, kitchen window to watch the chefs at work. This is the epitome of fun meets luxury. I can’t wait to come back.
