Raan Jay Fai

A street cook with a Michelin star and a charcoal wok
Ski goggles, two charcoal burners, one woman cooking every plate herself at the front of a Maha Chai Road shophouse. Jay Fai's crab omelette and drunken noodles earned her a Michelin star, a rare feat for street food.
The prices run high for the format and the wait can stretch for hours. It's become one of the most photographed food stops in Bangkok, but the cooking, not the spectacle, is what built the reputation.

The crab omelet was absolutely delicious, but the other dishes were fairly ordinary. What truly stood out was witnessing the incredible craftsmanship and hard work she puts into her culinary art—that was the main reason we came. We didn't have to wait in line for very long, and the service was genuinely excellent.

I skipped the omelet as it seemed overpriced and I had a crab omelet at another Michelin guide place a few weeks ago for less. The broccoli with crab and oyster sauce was phenomenal, with lump crab chunks that put to shame the canned version one gets almost everywhere these days. I ate here without appreciation of the fame it enjoys but I would say the flavor lives up to the hype even if the prices are a little wacky. Worth it.

Arrived at 10:30 a.m. on a weekday, and to my surprise, there was no line. The food lived up to the hype! The crab omelette is an absolute must-try—it’s packed with generous chunks of fresh crab meat in every bite. Watching Jay Fai cook every dish herself made the experience even more special. While the crab omelette is definitely expensive, the quality, portion, and unique experience make it worth trying at least once.

We waited in no line. Got seated immediately and we went at 11am. Prices: $$$ much higher than any other places we’ve eaten in Thailand. 1500 THB for just the crab omelette. You’re paying the premium for quality, amount of crab and also it be it made by a Michelin chef. Food: Simple, generous and great quality ingredients. The food is great because of how fresh it tastes. Just remember that you can get a crab omelette in many other street vendors for the fraction of the cost. But no one can make it like Jai Fai. Service: you’re not there for the service, you’re there for the food and it’s like any other street vendors service. Overall: come with having the expectation of food sourced and made well. Highly recommend to try it. Definitely worth it!

Jay Fai: Huge Portions, Fresh Seafood, Worth Every Baht! 🦀🔥 The hype is real. The ingredients are massive, ultra-fresh, and completely justify the price. Every dish was a hit! The Highlights: Crab Omelet: A total must-try. Paired with her signature chili sauce, it’s mind-blowingly delicious. Abalone with Chinese Broccoli: Pure, honest flavor. So good we ordered a second plate! Stir-fried Coconut Shoots with Prawns: My new second-favorite dish. We literally refused to let them clear the plate just so we could mix the remaining sauce with rice! Seafood Khua Gai: Jay Fai’s daughter worried we’d get "seafood fatigue" and suggested chicken. Our reply? "At Jay Fai, it’s seafood or nothing!" Also loved: The smoky Pad Kee Mao, Rich Dry Seafood Congee, and the aromatic Garlic Fried Seafood. Verdict: Zero regrets. Massive sizes, incredible flavor, and completely worth the money!
