Khao Soi Khun Yai

A lunch-only khao soi bowl that sells out by noon
Get there before the pot runs dry. Khao Soi Khun Yai is a tiny shop near Wat Kuan Kama in the north of Chiang Mai's Old City, run by an elderly cook who ladles out classic northern khao soi: egg noodles in coconut curry broth with pickled greens, shallots and lime.
It's cash only and cramped, with a handful of seats. Show up before noon or you'll be turning around at an empty pot.

Came here in July, its really chill and not crowded at all. The spicy noodle soup is AMAZING (50baht) but the overall portion is a bit small. Free drinking water! There are also places to park. I’d come back any day.

My husband came to Chiang Mai almost 10 years ago and this was the first place he wanted to revisit on our trip. He remembered it as the #1 Khao Soi and I have to agree! The meat was so tender (especially the beef) and it paired perfectly with the longan juice. It was busy but had plenty of seating to accommodate!

My food rating guide: 2.5/5 ‐-------> Average taste 5/5 ‐--------> Scrumptious! (My comfort food! 🤩) Local vibe. Khao Soi was medium bodied, lightly spicy, fragrant, and savoury. Tender chicken drumstick. Satisfying bowl. The raw onion was fresh and sweet. The salted vegetables were nice. The Thai milk tea packed a punch. Intense, fragrant, and creamy. Delicious. The meal was a 5/5 😍

This place feels less like a restaurant and more like someone's backyard kitchen that accidentally became really good at feeding people. You order at the counter, pay upfront, grab a seat, and when you're done, you simply leave. No waiting, no paperwork, no closing ceremony. A system so efficient it might frighten government agencies. I had the chicken khao soi and a lotus root drink. The khao soi was rich, fragrant, and smelled of coconut from halfway across the room. The problem is the lotus root drink completely stole the show. It walked in, grabbed the spotlight, and left my poor bowl of noodles competing for second place. The ladies running the place were lovely and even pointed me toward the chicken khao soi, which was an excellent recommendation. I've eaten an unreasonable amount of khao soi in Chiang Mai at this point, but I'd happily come back here to continue my very serious research into the beef and pork versions.

I order Khao Soi Chicken, the curry so good and not spicy. For Lotus Juice have a unique taste but still can enjoy it. Perfect for the lunch in Chiang Mai.
