Underground thermal pools in a Northeast Portland hotel
Portland's first underground thermal pools sit beneath this NE Alberta Street hotel, and you don't need a room to use them. Day passes get you into the pools, which is how most locals actually experience the place.
The building fills a full block between NE 11th and 12th, with around 100 rooms stacked above the spa level, plus movement studios and a restaurant mixing Portuguese and Japanese food. Skip downtown, this one's a residential-block find.

Celebrated a birthday weekend here. Service was great. Shout out to Alex from the front desk. She was phenomenal and super kind to our group! The spa was great and appreciated them keeping the sanctuary space quiet. Was a little let down that the outdoor sauna was closed. In terms of the room, it is super equipped with everything you need though would have appreciated either blackout curtain and/or blackout eye mask to not be awaken by the light. Overall, super great stay.

I spent three hours at the Thermal Springs yesterday (didn’t stay at the hotel). It was a fantastic experience. I spent time in both levels, including outside. Pro tip: you can’t have your phone in the silent subterranean level so if you get bored easily and like to read, you can bring a Kindle down there. You don’t need to bring a water bottle to the spa, they have reusable water cups for water and tea and there are several stations set up for it. I loved it so much that I want to plan a trip with my spouse around coming to the “spa” including staying at the hotel. I’d planned on eating at the cafe which looked great, but it was dinner time and the menu at Terra Mae looked awesome. It was a perfect meal. I’m absolutely coming back, possibly in just a few days 😆

Reviewing only the thermal springs part. I actually felt that the value proposition was alright. I don’t think $100 per person for three hours was tooooo expensive, however they really need to reconsider offering robes to everyone. The only way to get more towels is to go back to the locker room and having a robe would have just made me feel a bit more comfy getting in and out of the pools, as it is much warmer downstairs than it is upstairs. I will echo what some of the other reviewers said. The pool in the atrium is too cold for the vibes - it feels like it’s supposed to be tropical and the water is probably 75. The bathrooms feel dirty at the end of the day - I went for the 7-10pm time slot and by then a lot of hair and grime had accumulated in some of the spaces. It was crowded on a weekend, and felt like when you go to a McMenamins pool and there’s already a million people in the water so you just go back up to your room. I do feel a little mislead because most of the available time slots gave me the impression that there would only be 6 people booked per hour. You shouldn’t have to wait in a line for the salt room when you’re paying over $30 an hour for the experience. Although I didn’t have a bad time, I felt a bit awkward. Many couples were making out and sitting on each others’ laps in the downstairs pools because it was dark… making the “sanctuary” feel like more of a bathhouse than a spa. There needs to be some level of limited touching rules enforced. I really don’t need to see you bouncing on your boyfriend’s lap the whole time and it makes me wonder what’s going on under the water tbh… The place also honestly felt awkward as a queer person. There are no gender neutral bathrooms or locker rooms, which… fine, but I got stared at in those spaces instead of the other patrons just minding their own business like I was. I don’t fault Cascada too much for that because it’s a general cultural problem, and not sure how they could make it feel more inclusive, but just know that if you’re queer, Black, or prefer to dress modestly, you’re going to stand out amongst the rest of the patrons and maybe get stared at. Another Black reviewer on here mentioned feeling the same way. It says Cascada is “LGBTQ friendly” on their Google page but… how? Just because you won’t turn gay-looking people and couples away? I probably won’t come back unless they make some of these changes. If I was paying more than $150-200, I would have felt ripped off, but $100 was fine to try it out. The space and options are nice, but the experience needs elevated.

The front staff was very friendly and helpful as it was my first time there and I had many questions. The thermal environments are just phenomenal, clean, organized and relaxing. I just loved this place! The food area was closed and I am looking forward to go back and try their food too. You can just show up with your swimsuit, maybe a book and relax. They provide with your sandals and a towel.

Nicely mellow array of pools, saunas, and lounging spots as part of the 3 hour Thermal Springs package. Feels a bit like going into the elevator in the show "Severance" where you get mind-wiped and forget all your troubles after proceeding through the locker room to the other side. I do wish more food options had been available later in my 7-10 time slot, but we managed to grab a salad. I also would suggest booking earlier in the evening, since one whole area (Secret Garden) closes earlier than other two areas, so it gets pared down to 2/3 after like 9 p.m.
