Pizza on a University Heights corner

Slices and whole pies, a short beer list, not much else. It's the sort of place that ends up being the neighborhood's default Friday, which is harder to pull off than it sounds.

Sonny's opened in May 2025 at 1728 Madison Avenue, a residential corner of University Heights a few blocks off Park Boulevard.

As a party of five, picking a good location that has a little bit of everything for everyone(especially for my picky children) is a challenge. We stopped by Sonny's for the first time and were welcomed by the friendly hostess. The atmosphere is nostalgic to those retro pizza parlors. Our server was Kezi. He was friendly, outgoing and attentive .We ordered pizza and calamari. The calamari was great. Once the pizza arrived, it had an amazing cheese pull and the crust was nicely toasted. We added mushrooms to our pizza and the pizza had a generous amount. Definitely will be back to try the pastas and salads.

Everything we ordered was delicious, and the best part was the excellent service from our waiter, Facundo. Ask for him when you arrive. I will definitely return and highly recommend this place. The best pizza, pasta, and salad!

This is a great pizza spot. My party and I stopped by randomly and found the food to be great! The outdoor area is chill and they have a great atmosphere. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. We had Kezi help us today and his service was great! He even answered questions for us on having a possible event there. Would definitely recommend this place.

I wanted to like this place but I felt I was left with an ok pizza experience. The design of the place was fun and I can appreciate the attention to detail with the aesthetic that was envisioned. The service was good but slow. I came on a day where the pizza was half off luckily, because otherwise my bill would have been doubled. I’d agree that the pizza if at full price, would be expensive for the size. It was a good pizza, but not great. The dough/crust lacked flavor but the sauce and cheese was tasty. My biggest complaint was the heartburn that I got from this pizza was the worst I’ve ever had, and so did my partner. We didn’t go crazy with the spice but it was borderline painful. We thought it was a fluke but reheating the pizza the next day caused the same heartburn. On the that basis alone, I don’t think I’ll be coming back anytime soon.

Sonny’s absolutely crushed it! We stopped by on Friday night (5/15) and the entire vibe was excellent—they had the Padres game on and followed it up with awesome live music, which made for a perfect evening. The food and drinks were completely on point. We ordered a massive spread and everything hit the mark: the anchovies, scampi, chop salad, the Blitzkrieg Pepperoni, and the Alfredo pasta. On top of the killer atmosphere and food, our server was incredible—attentive, friendly, and totally on top of it. Sonny's is easily a spot we'll be coming back to. Highly recommend!
