Yakitori Tsuta

An 18-course chicken omakase inside a Convoy supermarket
Tatsuro Tsuchiya cooked at Yakitori Hino and Yakyudori before opening his own room. Those are the two names anyone naming San Diego's yakitori pantheon starts with. It's an 18 to 20 course omakase working through every part of the chicken over binchotan.
Yakitori Tsuta opened in August 2024 inside the Nijiya Market at 3860 Convoy Street. Book ahead; the counter is small and the supermarket location does not make it any less serious.

Great yakitori place. Did omakase with add ons. Food does come out slowly. Waitress doesn’t come as often at times.

I have never experienced a restaurant near San Diego that delivers such an incredible combination of delicious flavors, sophistication, and authentic Japanese taste. This is truly a place for anyone who appreciates and loves Japanese cuisine, whether they are Asian or from any other background. The yakitori is beyond anything I expected — honestly, it feels like it surpasses even what I’ve had in Japan. Every dish was satisfying, beautifully prepared, and absolutely delicious. I believe this may be the best Japanese restaurant in the San Diego area. In fact, it might even be one of the best Japanese dining experiences I’ve ever had anywhere, including Japan itself.

Each person will have to ask themselves if a premium omakase experience in what heretofore is a more casual style of dining is worth the elevated price. Specifically, if you've been a patron of Yakyudori and their outstanding Hino & Taisho establishments, you can rightly wonder just how far the bar is actually raised at Tsuta. I've eaten here several times, and I can attest that you will find quality here not offered in the other houses in SD. The efforts made here are surely worth a visit. Their attention to detail is admirable, and in a few instances borders on the sublime. Ultimately, I remain partial to the more pedestrian approach to yakitori as a go to experience. Some things in life just don't need to be dressed up.

This is a wonderfully curated yakitori experience. The entire meal took about 2.5. Chef and one waiter guide you through an omakase yakitori tasting that is super fun and well explained. You get to watch all of the meals made in front of you and the pacing was perfect.

I have nothing but the Highest Praise! If you are looking for a unique dining experience that transports you to a place far away: this is it!! The food was stupendous. Great spot to go for a birthday! My husband was truly enamored as he said and I quote, “My soul and body connected” after having one of the 8 skewers. We both enjoyed the same skewers. The appetizers, soup, duck, tail, the skin, the wings, the veil, the ramen. It was like nothing I have ever tasted in my life. Have nothing but gratitude for this wonderful restaurant.
