Nepali cooking on lower Polk, open since June 2026
The Golden Yak opened on Polk Street in June 2026, in the stretch below California that people call lower Polk and which sees more turnover than the Russian Hill blocks above it. The kitchen cooks Nepali, momos included, rather than folding itself into the broader Indian menu most Bay Area Himalayan restaurants settle for.
San Francisco proper has surprisingly few Nepali kitchens given how many sit across the bay. Lunch is the quieter service here.

One of the best nepali & indian food in San Francisco/bay area. Food is so good. Owners are also nice with cute environments. Highly recommend the neplai & indian food.

We had a garlic naan, a butter naan, a lamb tikka masala and sal daag, plus 2 mango lassis. They were all very good!!! The tikka masala was tasty but not salty like in other places. The mango lassi was yummy and not too sweet - Santi, the owner, explained to us that they only used fresh ingredients. Give them a try next time you are in the neighborhood.

This is probably the best place I have ever been in my entire life. I’m going to take my kids here over the weekend. I lost them in the divorce and this will surely make them love me more than their mother, who left me. The Chicken Biryani is really good.

Super yummy food! I especially loved the Butter Paneer Momos the most, but everything was tasty! Also appreciated the friendly service and beautiful art on the walls! :) can’t wait to come back again!

Delicious momos! Some would say the best in the city. We had the jhol soup momos and the baked chicken momos. Both were terrific! I would definitely come here again just for the momos. The prices are also pretty good! The owner is very, very sweet and kind. We talked for a whole and he gave us a free dish of chatpate, which I've never tried before! Spicy drinking food. We'll definitely be back again!
