Chinese cooking arrives on Ninth Avenue, across from Maggie & Mac's

Pàng opened on Ninth Avenue in June 2026, almost directly across the street from Maggie & Mac's, which arrived the same month. Two openings on one block in one month is unusual for the Inner Sunset, where tenancies here tend to run for decades, not months.

The Sunset has more Chinese restaurants than anywhere else in the city outside Chinatown, most of them clustered on Irving and Noriega. Ninth Avenue costs more to rent, and the newer arrivals here tend to work a narrower menu than the full banquet spread you'd find a few blocks south.

My friend and I went to try during their soft opening. We ordered: 1. XLB - tastes ok, there wasn’t any traditional flavors that I was able to taste. Coming from the heart of SGV and knowing good Chinese food, they can really work on this recipe. Forgot to take pic 2. Braised beef noodle soup - noodles are bomb, freshly made. But again unfortunately the soup had no flavor. There’s supposed to be 5 spice and I didn’t taste even 1 spice. 😔 I appreciated that they skimmed off all the fat, but I question if they cooked with lots of beef bone or not. 3. Mapo Tofu lotus and wonton chip dip. Good and different! I’d order this again. 4. Chicken and corn steamed dumpling, this was one of the best out of what we ordered. Many people ordered their entree dishes with rice and I’d like to go back and try that. I shared feedback to one of the waitresses and she was very sweet and took my feedback and gave me an employee discount on my bill which I appreciate. When I go back I’d do an updated review.

New place, the food is mostly unremarkable. We got black sesame noodles, stir fried fish cakes, chicken and corn dumpling, string beans, okra, and lava buns. Black sesame was the most disappointing. Flavor is just not good. Poorly constructed bowl components as well, not enough herbs to balance the sauce, under salted, no real texture variety. I did like that it wasn't soupy or brothy. 2/5. Fish cakes were my favorite, would give it a 4. String beans under salted and bland, disappointed, 3/5. Okra was better and I don't usually like okra. 4/5. Chicken and corn was again bland. Added chili crisps (they have at table) to punch it up. A 3/5. Lava buns also good for dessert, would give it a 4/5.

We had a great experience! Great service, atmosphere, and food. The fried rice and honey walnut shrimp w/ mala were the highlights.

One would not know this is a new restaurant. With the place packed, the service was timely, staff friendly and everything we enjoyed was delicious. Great flavor tones, balanced, and a new fave! As a New Yorker who recently moved to the Bay, I’m impressed and look forward to returning soon. The only disappointment was that we didn’t order dessert! Why didn’t we save room!

If you like Dumpling Home, you will love Pàng. If you like Ping’s Bistro and dislike Dumpling Home, Pàng is not for you. Pàng has cute decor, ambiance, and trendy menu designs to attract a diverse clientele. The flavors are fine but nothing special - the food lacks depth and falls flat. In particular, both the three treasure noodles and black sesame noodles were quite disappointing. The steamed broccoli and scallion pancake could have been served at any Chinese restaurant; the only dish that stood out was the Mapo Tofu Chip n Dip, but yet not enough to warrant a second visit given how the rest of the menu landed. If you’re looking for authentic Chinese food with satisfying, complex flavors, I’d recommend skipping Pàng.
