Kwame Onwuachi's return, four years later

Kwame Onwuachi left Kith and Kin in 2020 and DC spent four years waiting for whatever came next. It turned out to be Dōgon, an Afro-Caribbean dining room inside the Salamander on Maryland Avenue SW.

The menu reads Pan-African and Caribbean but almost nothing arrives the way you'd guess. Order the BBQ greens, peppery and sharp with slivers of beef bacon, before you order anything else.

Playlist is unrivaled. We had too much fun. NA cocktail The Astronomer was the best I’ve had. Wine list looked great. If I return in summer I’d order the Lambrusco. Jordan was our server and he was flawless. Never forgot about us, was super helpful in helping us decide on what we’d share, and his recs were on point. Thank you Jordan for the great service! We had a range of dishes including the mama dukes shrimp (perfect spice level), branzino (perfectly cooked & crispy skin), the piri piri salad, oysters and hoe crab. Oh yeah and the best cornbread I’ve ever tasted in my life. Each dish had its own thing going on, but it all flowed together well.

Let's start with atmosphere. We reserved through Resy.com and ended up in a part of the restaurant that is quiet with large comfy seats that felt very high-end. When I went to the restroom, I discovered that there's a whole other area that has tight seating and a bit more noisy. So, found that interesting. The food was what you would expect for a James Beard recognized chef. Everything was delicious so I'll focus on my favorites. The Mom Dukes Shrimp were exceptional. The sauce reminded me of the shrimp dishes that my mom made growing up in the Caribbean. So the chef is hitting the mark on authenticity. We had the snapper large share and the peas were again memories of childhood. The server was attentive and added to the experience. The Sorrel Rickey was again very authentic. The rum cake was great and the blackened golden berries added a whole new direction that made this an outstanding rum cake. I would come back if the chef had a version of Carribean black cake. Overall, loved the food and the experience but $$$$$...would have to be a very special occasion to do this again.

My reason for my mid rating was primarily based on service and ability to properly course the meal. First we were greeted by an initial server who clearly laid out the menu and took our drink orders. Shortly thereafter, a new individual came over and notified us that he was now our server. Our drinks never arrived until 1/we asked 2/ were more than halfway through our dinner. Additionally, our "snack" arrived after we were halfway through our dinner. Again, we had to ask the runner to provide us with our oxtail patties. We had SPECIFICALLY asked the original server if the meal would be properly coursed, as well as the new server. Both reaffirmed that the meal would be properly coursed. While food was tasty, this unfortunately left a poor dining experience, especially for a restaurant that was recently rated top 50 in north America.

This place gets a 10-10! One of the very best restaurants I have been to in DC. I'd been hearing about it for a long time and finally had the chance to go. The oxtail is exceptional! The fried whole snapper was amazing. The coco bread with shrimp, so delicious. I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. Reservations are a must, and even with a reservation we had to wait to be seated. This is a very busy spot! The last thing I'll say is that our server was amazing, managed to land us one of the last of the oxtail. All around an exceptional dinning experience.

Finally made it to Dogon! The vibe of this place was great. They had a great playlist playing but it wasn't loud or disruptive in anyway. It was a nice addition to the atmosphere. Jesse was our waiter and he was so great! Always checked up on us and had great recommendations and answers to our questions. Nothing in the cocktails list was speaking to me. So I got a glass of bubbly which I loved. I think it was the Cremante. My brother got the mango basil smash and my sister in law got the coco con leche. They said they were okay. Nothing special. We decided to get 4 small plates and 2 large plates. Might have been too much but there were too many things we wanted to try. We started off with the Ben's bowl. The lamb was soft and the sauce was so flavorful. This was a great start but at the end this ended up being low on the list compared to the other dishes. Then we got the hoe crab. This is such a unique dish. The pancakes were perfect. The sauce packed a punch. The crab was soft tasty. This was my favorite dish. Then the steak tartar which was good but nothing special. Then we had the tuna. The sauce on this was so good but the tuna and avocado was just okay. Then we had the curry branzino. The skin was so crispy and the fish was so soft. Amazing how they did that. The braised oxtail was probably the most disappointing. We got a lot of fatty pieces and thought the meat would be softer. Flavor also wasn't on par with the other dishes. For the price we expected more. Overall very happy with our experience. Will definitely be back.
