Hungary's oldest glove maker finally opens a Budapest shop

Pécs has been Hungary's glove town since János Hamerli started the country's first glove factory there in 1861. For most of that history, buying a pair meant heading south to the source. That changed when the manufactory opened Glove Gallery on Dessewffy utca, a few steps off Andrássy Avenue.

Two labels split the range: Hamerli for the top-end pairs, 1861 Glove Manufactory for the everyday premium line, running from lightweight knit sheepskin to deerskin lined with cashmere. Prices start around 75 euros and climb into the hundreds, and the staff measure your hand rather than guess a size.

• Open every day 9:00-21:00, weekends included, which is rare for a specialty shop in this district.
