Sandholt

A century-old family bakery on Laugavegur

Sandholt is a long-running family bakery on Laugavegur, now several generations deep, and the local vote for best bakery. The draw is the vínarbrauð, seedy sourdoughs, fluffy focaccia and seasonal tarts, plus a proper sit-down café menu.

It gets busy mid-morning with a queue at the counter, but the seating turns over. Get a coffee and a pastry, or stay for a full breakfast.

We ordered a couple of things. The salted caramel brownie was by far the best. The rest were okish (ham and cheese croissant, fruit danish, a bun with cranberries, banana bread). Service was fast. There was a queue inside if you wanted to get a table (so be prepared for that).

We tried the must-have cinnamon roll and shared the Shakshuka. Everything was excellent. The coffee was great, and the Shakshuka portion was perfect for two people to share. The Italian sausage, sourdough bread, and whipped butter paired beautifully together. We were also impressed by the huge selection of pastries and baked goods, though we simply didn't have enough room to try more. Definitely worth a second visit. We arrived around 8:20 AM, about an hour after opening. As one of Reykjavik's most popular cafés and bakeries, expect some waiting time if you're dining in. There were around 7–8 people ahead of us, and we waited approximately 20 minutes for a table. If you're only stopping by for pastries and coffee, there is virtually no wait for takeaway orders. Next time, I would probably grab pastries to go—or maybe even stay at their hotel just to be closer to all the baked goods.

We visited Sandholt twice during our visit to Reykavik. There's usually a 5-10 min wait to get a table due to its popularity. There are way too many delicious looking bakery options to choose from. The bakery options are great meanwhile the food is decent. Lamb Tinga sandwich and shakshuka was okayish, Salmon avacado toast was great. The interior and the open plan of the seating area is refreshing and makes you want to visit again.

This might be the best bakery and breakfast place in the city. We really enjoyed the avocado toast and yogurt with granola. Their flat white coffee is strong and I loved it. There were so many delicious looking cakes but we didn’t try this time. It is busy and bustling place great ambiance.

I like the place, and it's very popular here. My perspective is from a gluten free diet. There are only 2 options. If you eat pastry, this place is on fire! The options look amazing! It is a fun and lively atmosphere too. I had the fries egg, and it was served pretty well. I didn't like the coffee, so I switched to Earl Grey which was very good. My wife ordered a slow cooked lamb breakfast sandwich, and she loved it! I was pretty jealous actually. The service is pretty slow, and they got the order wrong. Overall, it's a cool place, and again, if you eat pastry this place is legit.
