A restaurant that serves cheese fondue and little else

One menu, one pot, one idea done properly. Smelt bets the whole restaurant on cheese fondue, a move risky enough that part of it was crowdfunded before the doors even opened.

The gamble paid off. The Korte Putstraat is Den Bosch's eating street, terrace after terrace of restaurants, and a shared pot of melted cheese suits the mood exactly. Go Swiss classic, or pick the Italian version if you want something less obvious.

I dined at Smelt again after a long time. It was disappointing. If I compare it to our first visit in September 2025, 4 things stood out to me. 1. The tent/terrace was filled with only one table except for us; okay, it was a Tuesday, but still. 2. The cheese was way too diluted. 3. The small plate/bowl with bread and vegetables looked very meager, but after asking, it was replaced with another meager plate. 4. The famous egg was missing. All the tables inside were set with an egg, though. When I asked about this, I was told that they had too few egg cups and spoons. I would say grab a few from inside, because no one was going to sit there in that weather anyway.

I am not a fan of cheese fondue and wanted to give it a try here. On the advice of a staff member, I ordered the Dutch version and thoroughly enjoyed it. Everything was delicious and the staff was extremely friendly and pleasant! We sat at the edge of the terrace (our own choice), which makes it a bit busy later in the day, but also cozy. We really enjoyed ourselves and recommend it 100%!
