Slow-roasted suckling pig in Koper's Šalara district

The suckling pig is why people drive out here on weekends, roasted slow until the skin cracks and the meat falls apart. Castra runs its kitchen on open fire: veal and lamb go under the peka lid, with a wood-fired oven for pizza alongside it.

It sits a few minutes outside the old town by car, in Koper's business and light-industrial belt rather than the tourist trail. Book ahead for Saturday, when the odojek sells out.

We were passing this restaurant on way to Bovec, so glad we stopped! The view is gorgeous, the food was delicious and the waiter was super lovely. He recommended we have the meal pictured below and it was phenomenal! Perfectly seasoned and the meat was so tender. Would highly recommend going out of your way to dine here :)

We came in a quite late afternoon for an early dinner, coming hungry from Croatia.. didn’t expect to wait quite long for the meal as the restaurant was practically empty (only 3 tables were occupied).. fortunately, the food was delicious.. we ordered sopska salat, veal in the oven and grilled chicken.. also one more thing, I have nothing against olive oil from Hofer, but we’re in Istra and we should expect homemade or at least better oil..

It was quite empty, yet the food was genuinely the best I’ve eaten. I ate the fried calamari and I’m still quite surprised that it was that good. The guy working here is also really nice, it was hard to understand each other since the German was pretty broken but on English it was totally fine. Over all: Nice, once I’ll get back to croatia, I’ll definitely eat here again! :3
