An old fish market, reborn as a food hall

Gushan fish market sat quiet for years before it reopened as Shinhamacho, a harborside food hall packing in fifteen restaurants. The lineup is rare for southern Taiwan: JAPAN BBQ's first spot outside Tokyo's Odaiba, Hinoya Curry's first in the country, and Ebisoba Ichigen found nowhere else on this end of the island.

The location does half the work. It sits right by the Gushan ferry pier where boats cross to Cijin, and the deck catches one of the better sunsets in the city. Go before the ferry, stay past dusk.

The restaurant offers a wide variety of dining options and convenient parking. It's a great place to visit around lunchtime or in the evening. The outdoor scenery is beautiful and perfect for taking photos, and you can take a boat to Cijin for sightseeing on the right.

The harborside food plaza, converted from the Gushan Fish Market, is integrated with the Gushan Ferry Terminal. The overall decor exudes a tropical Southeast Asian ambiance, with beautiful and expansive sea views all around. The interior is very comfortable. Unfortunately, the floor-to-ceiling windows in the indoor seating area are completely blocked by shop counters; to enjoy the sea view, one must go to the outdoor seating area, which lacks air conditioning.

There's milk tea, ice cream, Japanese food, Taiwanese food and Korean food. Gotta walk around the building to get to the entrance.

On March 26, 2025, I went to the Ocean Kitchen in Shinhamamacho. The auntie sitting across from me treated me to three egg tarts and a cold brew coffee from Ba Garlic Bun. The egg tarts were delicious 😋 and the cold brew coffee was also very strong, although I usually prefer lattes. The auntie next to me treated me to a bowl of Hinoya curry 🍛 pork cutlet curry rice 🍛, which was super delicious 😋. Today was a lucky day. For lunch, I ordered Ichigen Ramen. The broth was rich and delicious, and the noodles were also very good! Five stars! I also got a free Calpis! I also ordered 31 mini three-scoop ice cream, choosing three different flavors. The unique thing about this place is that you can try each flavor first, and then decide which flavors you want to buy! There are quite a lot of flavors, so I had some choice paralysis! I thought it was pretty good, but then I ended up eating a small bowl of pork cutlet curry rice 🍛 and feeling completely full (in Taiwanese). For drinks, I ordered a honey-scented black tea latte from Dan Chun Select, with a little sugar and a little ice, which was quite good! However, while the "Honey Fragrance" dish has a honey aroma, it doesn't actually contain honey! Overall, the food felt much more upscale than what I experienced at the Gushan Fish Market, and it was quite delicious! Now operated by the Hanshin Department Store Group, it feels like being in a department store. Besides 31 Ice Cream, they also have CREMIA soft serve ice cream from Hokkaido, Japan! The service was okay, it's self-service. The decor is plant-themed, with beautiful sofas, creating a great dining atmosphere. I even saw some European students from Zhongshan showing off their relationship! Zhongshan students get special discounts! For example, Hinoya Curry gives you a free golden fried egg with every main course order—basically a soft-boiled, oozing egg! Sapporo Ichigen Ramen gives you a free drink with every main course order (Cola or Calpis). Hinoya Curry's pork cutlet curry is delicious! The pork cutlet is tender and not bitter!

It's commendable that Hanshin was willing to take over. Actually, the mall isn't very big; it's a very small mall. But the chilly atmosphere of the waterfront is very strong, almost like being abroad. However, the humid heat of Kaohsiung summers doesn't really give you that waterfront feeling. You just want to go into the mall to enjoy the air conditioning... The prices inside are department store prices. Even the Ke-Bu-Ke black tea is more expensive than outside. The biggest challenge here is weekdays. Hama-Sing doesn't have many local Kaohsiung residents on weekdays. The local residents are mostly elderly, and the students from Zhongshan can't eat here every day. It's mostly tourists who make it popular. They have an exclusive Japanese curry shop inside. Haven't tried it yet, but I'll try it next time. 🅿️ Motorcycle parking is free. Enter from next to the parking lot barrier. April 2026
