Umi
Kaohsiung Opened 21 December 2024
The chef trained at Guoxiu. Now book him direct
Umi's chef is the top disciple of Guoxiu, the Kaohsiung izakaya so hard to book that a confirmed seat counts as bragging rights. When he opened his own counter in Qiaotou, the waiting list followed him, and it hasn't cooled off since.
Expect a small dinner-only kitchen with blackboard specials, grilled dishes and little cooked plates, running NT$600 to 1,000 a head with a NT$500 minimum. Groups of four or more should pre-order the kamameshi rice pot, the dish worth building the table around. Qiaotou sits a metro ride north of the center, and it earns the trip.
