Real Thai cooking in an old Bangkok student building

Soma took over a corner of Siam Patumwan House on Phaya Thai Road, a building students know better than diners do. The kitchen sticks to straight Thai recipes instead of dressing them up as fine dining, and that honesty got it onto Time Out's list of the city's best new restaurants.

It sits five minutes on foot from National Stadium BTS. Treat it as a stop before or after the Siam malls, not a destination on its own.

One of my favourite meals this trip to Bangkok was at SOMA Bangkok, a vibrant Thai Social Kitchen tucked inside Siam Patumwan House. Led by Head and 100 Mahaseth, and Chef Num Weerawat of Samuay & Sons, SOMA brings together Thai heritage and modern ideas through a relaxed, sharing style dining experience. Special thanks to Chef Chalee, who was incredibly welcoming and recommended several dishes on top of those already on our list. • We started with a series of appetisers like the stir fried crab with curry powder in a coconut tuile was both creative and delicious, with fragrant curry spiced crab cradled inside crisp coconut wafers. The crispy sago stuffed with shrimp delivered a delicate crunch on the outside, giving way to a savoury and tender filling. The crispy rice noodles in caramelised passion fruit sauce served on betel leaf delivered a combination of sweetness, tanginess and crunch. To beat the Bangkok heat, we also enjoyed the pickled shrimp in fish sauce with spicy citrus juice, which was bright, refreshing and packed with flavour. • The Chicken Ko Lae Skewers were one of the favourite. Smoky, juicy and lightly sweet from the spice marinade, they were paired with a bright curry salad that added freshness and crunch. Another surprise favourite was the stir fried chayote with sugar snap peas, oyster mushrooms and SOMA's XO sauce. Simple on paper, but packed with savoury depth and texture. • The grilled crispy pork belly came with beautifully crisp crackling skin and was paired with makwaen relish alongside compressed pineapple seasoned with makwaen fish sauce. The sweet and tangy pineapple provided a refreshing contrast to the richness of the pork. We also enjoyed the River Prawn Tom Yum, especially after following their recommendation to squeeze all the prawn head juices into the broth for an extra layer of flavour. • The Five Spice Braised Pork Leg served with fried bao buns, pickled mustard greens, salted duck egg yolk and pickled chilli sauce was another crowd pleaser, earning plenty of praise from both my dining companions. • Another favourite was the Gaeng Nhaem Kor Moo Yang. A velvety tomato and coconut based curry formed the foundation, while tangy fermented pork added contrast. Generous slices of grilled pork jowl brought savoury smokiness, while crushed peanuts and fresh ginger introduced texture and freshness that tied everything together. • We also shared the grilled skirt steak glazed with Regency and served alongside a kailan salad, a straightforward but satisfying dish that complemented the bolder Thai flavours across the table. • With prices that are surprisingly accessible, it's easy to lose control and end up ordering far more than planned. But whatever you do, save some room for dessert. Their signature longan mochi with coconut ice cream and rice crispies is well worth it. • SOMA brings a fresh, modern take to Thai communal dining, with dishes made for sharing around the table. There were honestly too many good dishes for us to pick a favourite. A meal we're very glad we made time for on this Bangkok trip. #underratedspots #must-tryfood #bangkokfood #bangkokdining

Had a wonderful lunch here with my wife on Father's Day. Modern Thai food in a jazzy restaurant. Every single dish was excellent, from starters to dessert. Very attentive service too. Must try dishes include Crispy Sago with Minced Pork, Grilled Crispy Pork Belly as well as the definite must try dessert: Longan Mochi w Coconut Ice cream. Our meal paired excellently with a bottle of Austria White Wine: Rennersistas Intergalactic. Will come back again in my next visit.

Modern bistro vibe with a thoughtful menu of complementary flavours, interesting textures, executed beautifully. Even flavour pairings which sounded unusual were a delight to the palate. Our favourites: the salted mackerel cakes on olive fried rice, the calamari in its own ink with a delicate and delicious rose apple salad, and the longan-mochi with coconut ice cream. It was hard to choose from the exciting, creative menu. Service was lovely. Recommending it to anyone we know coming to Bangkok, and so thankful our hotel suggested it to us.

Reservation via website (deposit required). Location: first floor of the office building. Go into the office lobby and walk behind the reception (either walk straight towards the escalator and turn left or walk left immediately after glass door behind the reception) Menu: Scan QR on menu for visual. Service: excellent and food is served quickly. Food: hit and misses, starters are fantastic. Starters: 1. Stir Fried Crab - must order 2. Crispy Sago - nice 3. Crispy Rice Noodle - nice. Dishes: 1. River Prawn “Naam Yum Boodoo” - the salad is nice but the prawn meat wasn’t as firm. 2. Fried Chicken Wing - average but helps to balance the meal with some fried stuff. 3. Salted Mackerel Fried Rice - Must Order and good for 2pax. 4. Crab Cake in Clear Soup - must order, comes in 4 pieces and good for 2pax. 5. Rover Prawn “Tom Yam” - the soup isn’t to my liking but the prawn is nicely “diced” up. Overall, it’s a nice restaurant with exceptional service. Only complain, the lighting is a bit dim and hard to take nice photos. lol.

Discovered Soma by simply scanning Google Map for restaurants near our hotel and the name caught my eye. Am I glad to, because the vibe, food and service are impeccable. Taste tested with a lunch and booked dinner the following night because we just had to try more of their food. If you're like me and have only two to dine with limited appetite, choose their unique Thai inspired dishes that you can't find elsewhere. But if you can go big, do it! What you see in the pictures are what we had over two meals...and dessert is the same longan masterpiece with a caramel sauce I'll be dreaming for days! To the brigade of Soma, thank you for our amazing time and see you soon!
