Xico

Live-fire Mexican cooking off Biltmore Ave
The Josper charcoal oven hits 1,000 degrees, and everything on the menu answers to it: seared duck finished in mole, tortillas pressed from fresh masa, guacamole made tableside. It landed downtown Asheville in November 2025, right where serious Mexican cooking had been missing.
The kitchen leans upscale but never forgets the point is char and smoke. Weekend brunch runs 10 to 2, dinner most nights, and the room stays packed enough that Tuesday's closure is the only breather all week.

Googled new restaurants in Asheville, decided to give Xico a try. Glad we did! Convenient South Slope location, dedicated parking lot. Interior is dark but nicely ambient. Margaritas are strong and delicious. Food is incredible! We started with house-made guacamole, which we crushed, accompanied by three house sauces - verde, smoky chipotle and mango habanero. All were terrific. Baked oysters were flavorful, chicken enchiladas are not to be missed. Tuna tostada was OK. We’ll be back to devour more guacamole!

Don’t let the understated atmosphere fool you: the quality of food coming out of this kitchen is exceptional. With truly high-quality ingredients (including sushi-grade raw fish), the menu is creative and well curated (not overwhelming). Chips, guac, and salsa—the litmus test of a high-end Mexican place—were all incredible. Our waitress was a step above, too. A true gem and well worth the price.

I visited Xico for a late birthday dinner and had a great time! The menu had a lot of good options and everything that I ordered was nice and fresh. Elianah was awesome as well! She was attentive and provided great suggestions. That was my first visit but I will definitely be coming back!

Quick service. Guacamole was absolutely amazing along with the mango jalapeño sauce! Was nicely surprised by the Caesar salad being prepared at our table and having all the steps explained to us. The Skirt steak was cooked perfectly, the pico on top had a lovely kick to it. The Calabaza had a very nice sweetness to it, but I wish it had been mashed instead of cubed. Plantains weren’t my favorite but still okay. John Michael was a great waiter. He had good suggestions and a nice personality. The menu options are different from most Mexican restaurants and is very pricey but worth it.

This place was unreal! The food was fantastic, especially the seafood options. Everything was authentic, fresh, and so so delicious. Savannah was our amazing server and provided stellar recommendations. As seasoned AVL foodies, this place just ranked towards the top of our list. Go here! You will not be disappointed.
