Birdie's Pizza

★ 4.5 · 1,519 reviews Asheville Opened July 2025

NY-style slices from a ten-year sourdough starter

The dough is the whole point. Birdie's stretches its New York-style pies from a sourdough culture the owners have kept alive for a decade, and the mozzarella gets hand-pulled in house, not shipped in.

A small core menu rotates seasonal toppings on top. It's counter service with a handful of seats, so grab a slice and walk it down Biltmore Ave.

The best pizza by the slice I have ever had. Heated up and fresh. The Coke machine was on point. Cool old building with tons of character.

The pizzas were huge. We ordered a 20" custom. Let me say this was a very delicious pizza! We had almost passed this place up thinking it was closed. Good thing we checked the door. After we arrived the business got even busier. They have an abundance of seating. Both indoor and outdoor. The inside close to the point of ordering was clustered with boxes and other stuff. Almost hiding some of the drinks they offer via bottles or cans. A very nice little spot off the beaten path that I would love to visit again on a return trip to the area.

We ended up walking into Birdie's while looking for a place for lunch on a Saturday around 1pm. My husband and I ended up ordering sandwiches (you order at the counter and they bring the food to your table), the Italian and the Chicken Cutlet Caesar. Our friends ordered a Meatball sub, a green salad, and pizza. They have tables inside and outside. The salad came first and I was surprised at how nice it looked compared to a salad you would get a casual pizza place. The sandwiches came and they were delicious! The bread on my Italian was warm and soft. I took a bite of the chicken cutlet and also delicious, we both agreed the sauce was great. My husband ended up splitting his with the friend who ordered the meatball sub. They both loved both! The friend who ordered pizza also had no complaints. This place went well above our expectations when we walked in. Next time we are in town, we will for sure be going back here!

The place is very accessible by walking through the downtown. Car parking is available but always busy since it is on the main Street of downtown. You can get pizzas as a whole pie or slices as well. I got the cheese slice and The River pizza slice. Both the slices were very tasty and well made. The food was fresh. The drink selection is limited but decent. Plenty of seating available as well. 10/10 would recommend.
