Coastal Indian seafood, coconut-forward, on Rutledge Avenue

Coconut, curry leaf and seafood done the way India's coastline cooks it, not the North Indian menu you'll find at most Charleston Indian spots. Rivayat leans into that regional gap and Eater already named it among the city's best new restaurants for 2026.

The seafood focus makes it an odd, easy fit next to the Lowcountry kitchens nearby. Same obsession with what comes out of the water, completely different coastline behind it.

A beautiful take on Indian cuisine. The vegetable samosa was perfectly crisp and full of flavor, the hariyali paneer was incredibly fresh and vibrant, and the chicken tikka masala—absolute perfection, rich, comforting, and beautifully balanced. The service made the experience even better—our server was genuinely kind, warm which added such a lovely personal touch. Every dish felt thoughtfully prepared and elevated.

The food was delicious, and the service was really good. Don't be afraid if you aren't sure how to pronounce something or if you don't know what something is, the staff was helpful and ready to answer any questions that we had. Excited to go back again to try other things we didn't get to try this time around.

The service was impeccable. The food was delicious. We ordered a variety of dishes. The dosa, sesame chilli naan and chole were my favorite of them all. The chai martini was delicious. And the names of the drinks… too creative ;)

From the minute we walked in until the moment we left, the service was impeccable. Started with their take on Puri street food which was tiny puffed bread that is opened at the top and each once came with a sauce meant to pour in. They change the flavor each day and ours was papaya based but also has some savoury onion and some other deliciousness. We both had shrimp based dishes. One with Curry and mango and the other was avocado and mango. Both were amazing and filling. We also had their fresh naan which was pillowy and light. Finished with a cardamom gelato which was a perfect finisher.

I thought the food and service at Rivayat was excellent. We got the kale salad to start. The cumin dressing was so flavorful. Not too powerful, but perfectly balanced on a fresh salad. We also got some garlic naan and kerala parotta (not pictured). Both were very nice. For our mains, we got the Dhaba Chicken Curry and the Lamb Biriyani. I thought these dishes were nicely balanced and aromatic. The portion sizes were also very generous. The angle of the pictures is a little deceptive, but for 2 people, we had more than enough food and took some leftovers home. We finished with the olive oil cake. The olive oil cake was good, but the mascarpone vanilla cream frosting was my favorite part. Overall, Rivayat was a very nice experience. The menu has plenty of options, the food was excellent and the service was smooth and not rushed. Highly recommend, cheers!
