Max & Helen's

★ 4.2 · 311 reviews Los Angeles Opened November 2025

Phil Rosenthal and Nancy Silverton's all-day diner, named after his parents.

Max & Helen's opened on Larchmont Boulevard in November 2025, in the space Le Petit Greek used to occupy. Phil Rosenthal named it after his parents; Nancy Silverton is executive chef. The idea came from the Palace Diner in Biddeford, Maine, a fifteen-seat counter inside a decommissioned railroad car.

Within weeks the waits ran to eight hours and the hot chocolate had gone viral. It is now run day to day by Rosenthal's daughter Lily Rosenthal Royal and her husband Mason Royal. Open 8am to 8pm daily, walk-ins only, with the cooking pitched as diner food given Silverton's technique.

Get the pancake. That was probably the best pancake I’ve ever had, and I have high standards. It was soft and pillowy yet a tiny bit crunchy from the griddle, and had a hint of lemon in it. YUMMM. My suggestion is to get two pancakes and a side of home fries! 😊

Arrived a little after 1pm, waited 25 mins which isn’t bad at all considering the numerous shops around to bide time. Absolutely mind blown by the waffle, crispy + airy at the same time. Only gribe is lack of acoustic baffling as the diner can get pretty loud with everyone talking at the same time. That said, food and service still worth the wait + visit.

My friend and I were drawn in by the lively atmosphere and the long line outside—it definitely looked like one of those trendy, must-try spots. Because of the crowd, we expected a long wait, and the staff estimated it would be over 30 minutes. Surprisingly, we were seated in just 10 minutes, which was a pleasant surprise. As for the food, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t particularly memorable either. The prices definitely reflected the Larchmont neighborhood—about $5 more expensive than what I’d normally expect to pay for a typical breakfast. I was especially disappointed with the L.E.O., which cost $21 for scrambled eggs with cooked salmon. The portion was much smaller than I expected, and it felt overpriced for what was served. Overall, it’s a good place to try once for the experience and the vibe, but it’s probably not somewhere I’d go out of my way to revisit.

All of the negative reviews about the “long wait” are out of touch. This place is still new, and of course owned by a tv personality.. of course it’s going to be busy!! However - we came at Tuesday around 10AM, and only waited a couple of minutes for them to clear a table. The service was great, and the food was EXCELLENT! The menu is classic, nostalgic, diner food. We ordered the breakfast plate, the NY breakfast sandwich, and a single pancake to share. The eggs were fluffy (of course) and high quality - evident by the taste and color. The pancake was a must order!! It had a fresh citrus aftertaste we really loved. Crispy edges, fluffy on the inside. We will definitely be back the next time we’re in town!

We got there around 8:15am and the wait time was already 1 hour. Knowing that we’re visiting one of the current most packed LA breakfast spot, my friends and I came knowing we would wait. An hour passed by relatively quickly when you’re catching up with friends. We got luck and were seated at the corner table inside by the window. All the staffs there were very very nice and definitely had our hearts. They gave us reccs for whats popular and what they personally like. The hot chocolate was REALLY THICK. It gets too intense really quickly. Might be better if it were to ever snow in LA. The burned marshmallow at the rim was a nice touch. Yummy but super sweet, I can only finish about 1/4 of the cup. We got waffle, florentine omelette, and their big breakfast plate to share. Omelette was very soft and the potato side on the brekky plate was yummy. I have to say it doesn’t distinct itself from any other breakfast too much but what can a breakfast be anymore? Waffle was very juicy with the slap of butter. It’s definitely a good idea to share than to have it all for yourself. Portion was big and the taste was great. Pricing is super reasonable, especially being in Larchmont, we’re happy to see normal priced food. Would really love to try their desserts but the food was so big we didnt have any space left in our stomach to try any. Not sure if we would ever come back to wait another hour or more just to try their dessert though. The vibe and decoration was immaculate. It feels very homey. Despite such a long waiting line outside, the staffs never rushed us at all. We feel very welcomed and able to enjoy the food and our time there.
