Sushi Zanmai
★ 4.6 · 130 reviews Los Angeles Opened 2025
Japan's Tuna King opens his first American sushi bar, in Chapman Market.
Sushi Zanmai is one of Japan's best-known mid-market sushi chains, run by Kiyoshi Kimura, the man the Japanese press calls the Tuna King for the sums he pays at the Toyosu new-year auction. In 2025 the brand opened its first location outside Japan, in Koreatown's Chapman Market at the corner of 6th and Alexandria, in the room Sake House by Hikari used to occupy.
The tuna is the reason to go. The rest of the menu is honest about being ordinary by comparison, and prices sit well below LA's omakase counters, which is the whole proposition.

We had the chance to celebrate Sushi Zanmai’s 1-year anniversary, and it was such a fun experience from start to finish. The restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere, friendly staff, and you can tell they truly care about quality and hospitality. One of the highlights is that Sushi Zanmai has its own exclusive house sake, which made the experience even more unique. We enjoyed a sake tasting, and each bottle had its own smooth, well-balanced flavor that paired beautifully with the food. If you enjoy Japanese sake, this is something you definitely shouldn’t skip. We ordered the Zanmai Gozen, and it was the perfect way to experience a variety of the restaurant’s specialties. The beautifully presented set included fresh sashimi, crispy shrimp and vegetable tempura, flavorful appetizers, a creative specialty roll, and perfectly cooked bites finished with rich sauces and just the right amount of spice. Every item was fresh, thoughtfully prepared, and showcased authentic Japanese flavors. The presentation was stunning, the ingredients tasted incredibly fresh, and every bite reflected the attention to detail that Sushi Zanmai is known for. The chefs were welcoming, and watching them prepare the dishes added to the overall dining experience. If you’re looking for the best Japanese restaurant, fresh sushi, premium sashimi, authentic Japanese cuisine, or a great place to enjoy Japanese sake, Sushi Zanmai is absolutely worth visiting. Congratulations on your first anniversary I can’t wait to come back and explore more of the menu. Highly recommended!

An incredible dining experience! The food is absolutely the star of the show at Sushizanmai. We ordered small portions of sushi and sashimi, and every single piece was prepared exceptionally fresh. To complement the meal, they have a remarkably wide selection of alcohol—we indulged in some fantastic sake that perfectly rounded out the dinner. What really stood out, beyond the menu, was the atmosphere. The interior setup and the exceptional customer service feel incredibly close to a genuine dining experience right in Japan. I’d say the vibe, friendliness, and attention to detail are about 90% of the way to an authentic Tokyo establishment. The staff was genuinely accommodating and kind throughout our entire visit. I highly recommend this spot to anyone, and I will absolutely be coming back the next time I’m in the area!

I had an amazing experience at Sushi Zanmai in Los Angeles for a special omakase night curated by Kiyoshi Kimura also known as the "Tuna King". This was actually my second time meeting him, which made the evening even more memorable. The menu was thoughtfully paced and beautifully executed. We started with a refreshing welcome drink featuring orange and plum wine from Wakayama, followed by a light and flavorful cold shabu shabu with red snapper and rock shrimp in a creamy spicy sauce. The tuna trio and sashimi were incredibly fresh and paired perfectly with their signature sweet soy. One of the standout courses included seared sweet shrimp and salmon with saikyo miso, along with a variety of eel dishes that were rich and satisfying. The baked crab hand roll was definitely a highlight - warm, creamy, and absolutely delicious. We ended the night with vanilla ice cream topped with caramel sea salt, which was the perfect sweet finish. Overall, it was an elevated and memorable omakase experience with high-quality ingredients and great attention to detail. Highly recommend for sushi lovers!
