Nobu's first New York hotel, inside the shuttered Plaza Athénée

The Hôtel Plaza Athénée on East 64th Street shut its doors in 2020 and sat empty for years. Nobu Hospitality is bringing the building back as its first New York hotel, due in 2026.

Plans call for 145 rooms and suites, a traditional Japanese onsen, a full spa, a Nobu omakase restaurant and a standalone townhouse with its own service. Some suites get glassed-in indoor-outdoor terraces. Nobu runs hotels from London to Ibiza, but this one sits two blocks from Central Park.

Good to know

• The plan includes a traditional Japanese onsen, a first for an Upper East Side hotel; expect it to be the hardest booking in the building.
