Kelang

Family-run Malaysian in Greenpoint, named for Chris Low's hometown
Chris Low named Kelang after Klang, the Malaysian town he grew up in, and opened it on Manhattan Avenue with his family. He already ran Hainan Chicken House, and the poached half chicken here carries that lineage, marinated in ginger, scallion and dark soy.
The rest of the menu is less predictable. Paratha comes with stracciatella. There's an oxtail rendang worth ordering, and desserts run to burnt pineapple gelato and a crème brûlée made with Musang King durian. Lunch runs weekends only.

Once again, a tip of the hat the our friends at tasting collective for introducing us to this exciting new spot. Harkening back to chef Chris Low’s childhood, Kelang blends Malaysian flavors with riffs on Italian red sauce joint classics. The Rojak salad of cucumber, jicama, mango, pineapple, youtiao, peanut, dark soy, chili, belacan brought the perfect balance of sweet salty and crunch. The Puffed Paratha riffed on pizza with red lentil dhal, straciatella, sambal and an herb salad. The pork rib with garlic, root tea, dark soy, shiitake, morel, daikon, red date and goji berry was rich, deep and very tender. The most clever dish of the evening was the Ayam Goreng "Parm" featuring crispy chicken cutlet, lime leaf ricotta, parmesan, chili crisp marinara and mee goreng was visually and aromatically creative while holding true to what makes parm, ‘parm’. We ended with the Cendol Sundae of pandan gelato & rice noodle, sweet & salty red bean, corn in a milk & honey youtiao. Service was on point. If I have a quibble, it is that the decor, with its nod to 1970’s ‘ethic’ restaurant tropes was a bit underwhelming. Nice idea. Would benefit from a designer’s eye.

What a gem! The food was really flavorful and delicious, and the mocktails were soooo good. Great sized portions too. We sat at the bar and the bartender was wonderful. Shoutout to Odis! He was so knowledgeable and patient with our questions. He made our experience even better. I must add, the decor and ambiance were just gorgeous. Can’t wait to go back and try other dishes.

Extremely delicious. Every dish has so many layers of flavor and texture. Make sure to get rice because you do not want to leave a drop on the plate!

Skip this restaurant if you don’t enjoy deeply complex sauces with incredible depth that must truly be savored. The vibes in the restaurant were nearly as immaculate as the food. I loved their unique take on an old fashioned. The gnocchi was my favorite.

Loved this more modern Malaysian place. All the dishes we got were super tasty, my favorite was the stir fry broad rice noodle with egg, curry puff (love the spices), rendang, chicken rice.
