Hotel Stratford

★ 3.5 · 749 reviews San Francisco Opened July 2024

America's first Handwritten Collection hotel, a block from Union Square

The Stratford became the first hotel in the United States under Accor's Handwritten Collection, the label that converts small independent hotels rather than building new ones. Accor picked San Francisco on purpose, betting on the city's recovery.

Frame Ventures put the eight-storey building through a multimillion-dollar renovation. It refurbished the lobby and added a European-style cafe and bar designed by MODO. The 94 rooms stay compact and the rates stay low, a step from the Powell Street cable car turnaround.

Good to know

  • The Powell Street cable car turnaround is steps from the door, with Union Square a block away.
  • Rooms in the 1907 building run small and simple; it's a location-and-price play, not a suite stay.

Comfy room and was relatively quiet. They weren't aware that my booking included breakfast and had to show the booking each time, not a huge deal but not ideal. Breakfast was a selection of items from the cafe, although you have to ask it's not massively clear. No bag drop available. I would say that for the money the facilities offered here vs nearby hotels were not as good.

Nice location for exploring San Francisco, close to BART and tram. Rooms are clean and comfortable but small and the lack of temperature in the rooms disrupted sleep. Good value for money though and would stay here again.

We really enjoyed our stay at this city centre hotel. Great, safe location. Easy check in ( good security measures), small but comfortable and clean room. Nothing grand but for the price, no complaints. Quite room. Adjacent coffee shop ideal for a drink and bite to eat before an early start. Staff flexible with late check out ( we had an early booking for Alcatraz). Would we stay here again; most definitely.

Got a great deal on this hotel. Located next to Union Square with a cable car stop right out front. Great shopping , tons of breakfast spots, good proximity to china town. The lobby is micro and you check yourself in on an iPad but all the staff have been very nice. The room is also micro - I do t mind this but there is no where to put a suitcase on the floor where you won’t trip on it. The sink is in the room which is super quirky. The biggest down side to this hotel is the neighbors, you can hear every move they make; every door opening; every shower. Our neighbors had a cold and cough all night long. Felt like they were in our room. Can you get a cold through the wall?! For the price I paid I’ll look past this but if I had paid full price I would be making a huge fuss.

Best location and stylish inside. Hotel staff lovely. Rooms are little bit small and thats for a city hotel ok but the only downside is the noise outside what you can hear through the windows. CableCar Stop is 20m away and Powell Station five minutes by feet.
