Nob Hill's grand dame, restyled as a home not museum

Ken Fulk's brief for the restoration was a grand residence, not a museum piece. He kept the Georgian plasterwork ceilings and boiserie panels while reworking all 143 keys. A nearly 1,500-square-foot penthouse sits on top.

The building went up in 1922 as the Huntington Apartments. It closed in 2020 and reopened in March 2026, the longest closure of any San Francisco landmark hotel. The Big Four restaurant and its three-floor spa came back. Locals mostly just wanted their bar back.

Good to know

  • The Big Four restaurant returned with the reopening, celebrating its 50th anniversary; book it.
  • The Nob Hill Spa spans three floors and its indoor pool with city views is the quietest room on the hill.
  • The California Street cable car stops essentially at the door.

Stayed for the week and would highly recommend the hotel. Perfectly renovated and spotless, it was a very comfortable stay. The hotel bar/restaurant is great too.

This grand dame of Nob Hill is bringing back elegance and service to San Francisco! The reopening of The Huntington has been highly anticipated by locals and former residents like me. I felt like I was being welcomed home to the Bay Area that I remembered from decades past. Proper tribute has been paid to the history of the building and surrounding area with modern touches expected of the technology forward destination. The rooms and suites are generously proportioned, so you do not feel boxed in, and the views from the top of Nob Hill frame iconic landmarks of San Francisco. Make sure to dine in Big Four, and yes, the chicken pot pie is still fantastic, but the Cioppino with a side of sourdough tastes like home! The new Arabella's cocktail bar is an experience where Alexei crafts stories as well as cocktails. Finally, the Spa with the pool overlooking the city is a must! Our treatments were so soothing, so we were happy to relax afterwards poolside or in the sanctuary for the rest of the afternoon. But the heart of the hotel is the team! Every single person we came into contact with was eager to assist and genuinely interested in how our stay was going. We felt cared for and recognized throughout our entire stay, and we will definitely be back!

My wife and I enjoyed a spectacular stay at The Huntington Hotel. Every step of the experience felt seamless and thought through. We were also delighted to enjoy the upscale cocktail bar - Arabella's, and The Big 4 restaurant, which both felt upscale yet non pretentions. We are both well traveled and agree that this place is like no other we have ever seen - completely unique and timeless. A huge thank you to the entire staff for curating an experience we will never forget!!

I had a wonderful stay at The Huntington Hotel. The property has a classic charm, beautiful views of San Francisco, and a welcoming atmosphere. The team was consistently friendly, attentive, and eager to assist, making the experience feel personalized from arrival to departure. The rooms were comfortable, the public spaces were well maintained, and the location is excellent for exploring the city. I order In room dining and the service was great, you must visit the big 4 and try the famous pot pie.

I stayed here the first night I was in San Francisco. That was 30 years ago and it seems to have been/is being considerably refurbished. The rooms were 1/4 the price then, and I would not have called it "5 star", so maybe the work is paying off. What is still the same and relevant is that I think it's the best first night location in San Francisco, period. A nice walk to market, you get to see the seamier side as you pass through the Tenderloin, the Cathedral across the street is worth seeing, and not something you'd normally go out of your way for. Right in the center of a lot of things to see and do, it's a great way to get started.
