Bar Carnation

A wine bar with a restaurant's ambition
The menu is short and shifts with whatever the kitchen can source that week, and it earned Bar Carnation a spot on Broadsheet's list of the year's eleven best new Melbourne restaurants. Wine bar in form, restaurant in ambition.
Rathdowne Street's shopping strip stays quiet, so this isn't a walk-in-off-the-street kind of place the way Lygon is nearby. Book ahead, or take your chances at the bar.

Stopped for a quick bite tonight, after walking past for a while, the place is aways very busy. Been to Carnation Canteen which was good. But I have to say from start to finish the staff were excellent, and the food was brilliantly simply, hot, tasty,.There is not many places that get the 1% right, but this place exceeds what hospitality is about, service, food, atmosphere, and just start to end brilliant, well done team Canteen Bar, thanks for showing hospitality what its all about.

A bit of a disappointment , here. Longtime devotees of Geralds ( and not enthusiastic about its new abode) , we had high hopes of Bar Carnation. On the positive side, a splendid wine list. And the reworked space is elegant . The downside… A very short menu. I had an excellent steak frites , my partner a pedestrian fritto misto. The service competent , but not unduly welcoming. Given the restaurant was perhaps a quarter full, and our order was simplicity itself, the wait for food seemed excessive. And the space was seriously chilly. Cold to the point of discomfort. We went hoping to be seduced, departed less than enchanted.

Such a cozy little neighbourhood gem. The whole space at Bar Carnation feels warm, intimate and effortlessly nostalgic — like a tiny hidden diner you’d randomly discover on a quiet Melbourne night. We ordered the steak with fries, squid ink rigatoni (pasta of the day), salad, cocktails and finished with their chocolate dessert. Honestly everything was simple but done really well. The pasta was rich and savoury without being too heavy, the steak was cooked perfectly, and the fries with the creamy dipping sauce were dangerously addictive. The cocktail pairing worked so well with the food too, especially sitting along the counter watching everything happen in the open kitchen. Service felt relaxed and genuine, which made the whole dinner even better. The dessert was a bit too sweet for me but overall experience and services are great. Definitely the kind of place you come for a slow dinner, good conversations and comfort food that actually hits. Would happily come back again for another girl’s night🍝🍷

The place is pretty hip . They played really cool hip hop music, had a great wine selection, and every dish we ordered was delicious. My favorite was definitely the meatballs. Cute spot for a date night or a night out with friends. Definitely coming back.
