Café Bräunerhof
★ 4.0 · 1,588 reviews Vienna Opened July 2026
A 1920s Kaffeehaus institution, carefully restored and reopened by the Plachutta family and Peter Friese
Café Bräunerhof reopened on Stallburggasse in July 2026, after the historic coffeehouse, running continuously since the 1920s, went through insolvency and sat closed. The revival is a joint project of the Plachutta restaurant family and Peter Friese, who also runs Zum Schwarzen Kameel, and the renovation was handled carefully to preserve the room's original character rather than modernize it.
The menu stays close to what made the Bräunerhof a fixture in the first place: classic Viennese coffee specialties, house-made Mehlspeisen, and simple Wiener Küche, served with newspapers on hand in the old coffeehouse tradition.

Newly reopened traditional coffeehouse. Very attentive service and a well-priced lunch menu. The food was delicious and served very quickly. Highly recommended for a fast, enjoyable lunch or a relaxing coffee break.

Well... we came there because of Bernhard spent half of his adult life in this cafe. We came, we sat, we ate and we left. Food is totally mediocre (btw, how can you serve a dried out cream cake from yesturday?! In Paris its unimmaginable!), service even worst (except really nice, smiling dark-haired lady at the entrance!). How a waiter in Vienna nowadays can not understand basic english restaurant and food vocabulary like "plant milk / oat milk"? (Ofc they didn't have it there, so maybe this is the reason). When we left, we came across an idea that probably we just experienced why Bernhard so much hated viennese cafees (and austrian society), but couldn't live without it. Well... tradition is good (sometimes), but being now and lookimg into future is way better and constructive. And this is my "wish-word" for this place.

As there was a queue in front another traditional restaurant in the alley, I walked ahead, passed by here, looked inside, saw the nice authentic setting and immediately walked in. The interior was charming, and the waiter was attentive and efficient; he remembered to take my order after doing several tasks on the side of areas that I sat on. Schnitzel and Suppe were good. Not stunning and a bit over priced, but well made, balanced taste. On tipping : as mentioned, the waiter was attentive and efficient, however at the end, He directly asked for 1 more euro for tip when he saw I gave a 20 Euro note for a 19 Euro bill. I was taken back, as tipping is not as a mandatory by norm in the country, and the good impression from before was a bit dented, but I read there were similar behaviours at the old cafe next door (Cafe Hawelka),so all aspects considered, I accepted the behaviour of asking for tips as an unspoken norm for these old cafes geared towards tourists as an unfortunate development of tourism in this area that was unpleasant but not that outrageous.

Loved it! Since the renovation, Café Bräunerhof has become even better. The refurbishment was done beautifully, preserving its authentic traditional Viennese coffeehouse charm while giving the space a fresh feel. If you enjoy places like Schwarzes Kameel or Café Prückel, you’ll feel right at home here. A classic Viennese café experience with timeless atmosphere, excellent coffee and food, and plenty of character!!

A bit crowded. The schnitzel was more breading than meat. And they only serve .33 beers in bottles for 3.90. That was the worst part. The atmosphere of the place was cool though. We'll probably go back during off season.
