Modern Japanese cooking inspired by chef Makoto Okuwa
Makoto runs a modern Japanese menu built on fresh ingredients and technique, not the heavier fusion style common elsewhere in the city. It's open daily from noon to 11pm inside Plaza Latitud 18.
A three-course tasting menu during the 2025 Restaurant Week is how a lot of first-time visitors found it. The plaza around it has become one of the busier blocks in Piantini since 2024.

Highly recommend this blessing Food was amazing and service was excellent. Makoto salad was great and the Waygu fried rice was delicious.

Two 5/5 bites, one sad miso, and the concierge who swore this was her favorite of four. She runs a building with four restaurants and sent us straight down to this one. Bold. And mostly it pays off. The spicy edamame and spicy tuna were the real deal, clean 5/5 plates that taste like the kitchen actually means it. The miso soup mostly showed up to fill space, a polite 3/5 you forget by the next bite. The legend says this place is a glossy, Miami-priced temple where the city’s elite go to be seen. Half true. It is genuinely good looking, modern, with a terrace your dog can join. But the sell-your-car pricing is oversold. Cocktails run about ten bucks and the bill behaves itself for what you get. Nice ingredients, fair prices, no drama. Best Japanese in Santo Domingo? It is very good. It is not a pilgrimage. If you are already in Piantini or staying upstairs, grab a seat at the sushi counter, watch the knives work, and order more of those two winners and fewer soups. The concierge wasn’t wrong. She just wasn’t life changing. Next stop: Maialino in the Zona Colonial. Trading sushi for Italian in the oldest streets in the Americas, and seeing if the cobblestones come with a kitchen to match. Cheap or pricey, I don’t care. Only the best place to go.

This is a fusion Japanese restaurant that serves Japanese dishes their way. It’s appears to be fairly new, very modern, upscale atmosphere. The service was very good, and the staff were friendly. The weakness was the food. I ordered some Brussels sprouts that came with a Korean sauce, and it just didn’t match for me. The sauce was far too strong for the sprouts, so you couldn’t taste the sprouts at all. I ordered the shrimp tempura and the breading was thick, not flaky like traditional tempura, and it tasted like ginger. Another combination that didn’t appeal to me. So while the restaurant was nice, the food is the bottom line, and for me it wasn’t a place that I will repeat.
