Market-driven bakery and kitchen inside El Convento
Materia Prima runs on one rule: cook from the market and let the product lead. By day the obrador turns out medialunas, palmeritas and sweet and savory danishes inside Hotel El Convento in Old San Juan.
By night the kitchen writes off-menu specials around whatever local ingredients came in freshest. Skip the printed menu and just ask what they're running tonight.

The best food we had in San Juan. We started with the sardines and beet salad, had the chicken and ribeye for entrees, and a side of the sweet potato with lavender. Everything was so incredibly unique and flavorful. The server, Lara, was knowledgeable and very welcoming. I would fly back to San Juan just for this restaurant and to sit with Lara again.

Food was great. Service was good. The atmosphere is great! Not a fan of the drinks. Had the sour and old fashioned. Both very floral and light. Not my cup of tea. Recommend The place. Enjoy!

The best meal my boyfriend and I have ever had. The flavors were so vibrant and unique, and the food was so fresh. The staff were super friendly and seemed passionate about making sure we had a great experience (especially our server Christian and Jose). I would 100% recommend anyone to come here and we will definitely be returning.

I recommend! The place is lovely and the food was good, not amazing, but tasty yes, service great but the bathrooms really bad, look they didn’t belong to the restaurant. It’s better to go with friends/family to share the plates. Recommend the pork with piril sauce was very soft, ny steak also was good, pavlova don’t recommend didn’t taste fresh and the merengue was too hard.

Absolutely wonderful lunch experience. Worth the 12 minute walk from the pier. I had the chicken alfredo (Tagliatelle) and it was the best pasta I've ever eaten. The chicken was expertly cooked and seasoned, and the pasta was tender and soaked with the sauce. I ate with family and all of us had great things to say about our meals, from the house salad to the chicken mofongo (my sister was especially enamored with her husband's fish tacos). They had plenty of drinks and their piña Colada and Preciosa house tequila drink was superb. The price was about $200 for four adults and a young child (they had chicken tenders which was a nice surprise as they weren't on the menu) including alcohol; the average meal price was $25, putting it around the same price as a normal chain restaurant back on the mainland- but the quality being far superior. The service was excellent- our waiter was Juan, who asked us immediately if we spoke english or Spanish, which was very considerate. He was extremely attentive and courteous, providing recommendations and prompt drink refills. The atmosphere was quiet and relaxing- the restaurant is located in the hotel Convent, and the surrounds are historic luxury, with old world columns and arches and water fountains where small birds were bathing to the enjoyment of my nephew. Overall the experience was excellent- it was just prestigious enough without being overwhlemingly expensive. Portion sizes were adequate and filling, but if youre looking for a cheap way to get a lot of food this wouldn't be my first choice. But if you want quality and good service however, I highly recommend Materia Prima at Hotel Convent.
