Umenoya opened on Västergatan in Gamla Väster in March 2026, built around a single marble bar with room for fifteen guests. Chef Takao Fujii took a route to Malmö that ran through Osaka's kitchens and Paris's fashion houses before he landed here.
The menu is fixed, a multi-course rundown pulled from his family's restaurant back in Osaka. With just fifteen seats, the kitchen sits close enough that you can watch every plate come together.

I loved the subtle nostalgia of Japanese flavors through ingredients combined with the chef’s unique personal touch. The food has that beautiful umami simplicity, yet you can feel how much thought and technique goes into balancing every ingredient, texture, and flavor. If you want to experience real Japanese sushi and its craftsmanship, I highly recommend Umenoya. We’ll definitely be coming back!

Exceptional food, service, and atmosphere. This isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience. Chef Takao-san and his team are outstanding, and Umenoya is easily one of the best Japanese restaurants in Scandinavia. Seating is limited, so be sure to book ahead. Highly recommended, I hope Umenoya sticks around for a long time!

Perfect. Simply perfect. Every single morsel of food in the eleven-course Omakase meal was excellent, the service was impeccable and the setting was stylish, simple and relaxing. World Class!
