Sushi meets ceviche on Long Bay's quiet side

SUI-REN skips the straight sushi playbook and runs Asian-Peruvian fusion instead: fresh sushi next to ceviche and small plates like beef bao. It's the kind of menu you order around, not off.

The restaurant sits inside The Shore Club, but on the quieter east side of the island near the airport, away from the Grace Bay crowd. Closed Tuesdays, otherwise dinner runs from 6 to 9:30pm.

Good to know

  • Closed Tuesdays, open 6-9:30pm the rest of the week; reservations recommended well ahead in high season.
  • Go for the ceviche and the beef bao small plates before moving to sushi, not the other way around.

Sui Ren has a lot of potential. The food was absolutely delicious, and every dish we had was full of flavor and beautifully prepared. The atmosphere and décor are also excellent, creating a modern, upscale dining experience. Unfortunately, the service fell well below what you would expect from a high-end restaurant. As many other reviewers have mentioned, service seems to be the biggest issue. Our server didn’t take our order correctly, and we had to ask the manager to step in so the rest of our order could be prepared. Our drinks didn’t arrive until well after the appetizers, and only after we brought it to their attention. Throughout the meal, there seemed to be very little sense of urgency from the waitstaff. It’s disappointing because the kitchen is clearly doing an outstanding job, but the front-of-house experience doesn’t match the quality of the food. If Sui Ren can improve its service, it has the potential to be one of the best dining experiences around.

We had a great experience, we ordered the slow cooked lamb as well as the red snapper and the flavors were amazing as well as the presentation. The staff was so attentive and friendly. Definitely recommend.

Food recommendations: - Ceviche Sui-ren - Lomo Saltado (beef was deliciously tender) - Chaufa de Pato (good, but slightly overcooked) - Apple Tarte Tatin Food ordered: - Ceviche Sui-ren - Lomo Saltado - Chaufa de Pato - Cuatro Leches - Apple Tarte Tatin Pros: - compared to others, like Indigo, the portions felt generous for two people. - meal pacing was spot on and the menu variety was a pleasant surprise. - dinner ambiance was great with dramatically lit paths and architecture. Cons: - nothing overt, but the restaurant is tucked away if you are not driving there yourself. *Reservations* I made my reservation about a week in advance. If you are traveling with a larger party of six, like we sometimes were, I recommend you have these set up asap. **Disclaimer** I was visiting from New York, so most of what can be found in TCI I have tried in some shape or form in the city. Each of my reviews balances the cuisines I have had before, while also appreciating the distinct approach of the dishes served on the island. Anyone on their high horse expecting the exact same culinary experience and prices as they do in the United States needs to remind themselves that they are on an island that imports approximately 90% of their ingredients. ***Financial constraints*** TCI hosts folks from a range of income brackets. You can stay at a hotel for 4 nights for approximately $2,000 - $5000. Or you can get a villa for up to $7,000 - $18,000 a night. I was at the lower end of that 4-night spectrum and wanted to be conscious of folks that are trying to figure out where they want to spend their hard-earned money.

Sui Ren was a beautifully curated dining experience from start to finish. The pineapple mocktail was incredible, refreshing and perfectly balanced, easily one of the best non-alcoholic drinks we had on the trip. We ordered the Asian roll and the rainbow roll, both incredibly fresh and full of flavour, and the miso soup was super yummy, warm and clean tasting. For mains we had the 8oz steak with a side of rice and avocado mash, which was tender and perfectly satisfying. Dessert truly ended the night on a high note. The rice pudding with green tea powder lightly torched on top was stunning, and the coconut dessert tasted like an expensive coconut Ferrero Rocher. The environment is sleek, elegant and beautifully designed, and we felt genuinely cared for throughout the evening. Generous portions, attentive service and an overall refined experience we would absolutely return for.

The atmosphere is a nice high end experience. Beautiful marble and mirror walls. Nice lighting. Sand dollars on the ceiling. The food was cooked to perfection. The steak was delicious, melted in your mouth. The sushi was incredible. The Asian roll and rainbow roll was amazing. Some of the best sushi I’ve ever had. The desert was incredible as well. Definitely recommend. It’s not cheap. It’s worth the experience. You get what you pay for.
