Stinky tofu and boiled fish in Wallingford

Spicy Hunan Kitchen opened on Interlake Ave N in January 2026, a casual room with a neon sign the size of the window. This is Hunan cooking, so expect heat and fermentation, not the numbing of Sichuan food.

Start with the black gold stinky tofu, then the Xiangtan boiled fish or the mashed eggplant with century egg and chili oil. Most orders go out the door, but there are a few tables if you want to sit.

This was probably the most authentic Chinese meal I’ve had in the Seattle area so far. The restaurant is tucked away on a quiet, leafy street corner with a distinctive red storefront. The dining room is small and cozy, with only about six tables, giving it a warm, neighborhood feel. We came with a group of friends and ended up staying from the first seating until the last 😂. We ordered a wide variety of dishes, and almost everything was excellent. My personal favorites were the century egg, the duck soup, and the hand-torn cabbage. The other dishes were also very well executed. You can tell everything is cooked to order in the kitchen. Each dish arrives piping hot with plenty of wok hei (that smoky “breath of the wok” flavor), which is something that’s hard to find. If you’re looking for authentic Hunan-style Chinese food with bold, spicy flavors, this place is definitely worth a visit!

Friends took me here. The food is okay but too spicy and salty. Not healthy though. I am a bit concerned about the safety. The erupting wok fire is not something you would see anywhere else.

My friend I are from Hunan and this restaurant is pretty authentic, taste wise. The volume of each dish is not that big, 4 people with big appetites ordered 8 dish and cost us ~$180, but we were very full. I’ve started ranked the dishes on the pictures, everything 4+ stars are definitely worth trying out. The service is also pretty good, they can cater to allergies like green onion and garlic without a problem. The serving speed is also pretty acceptable among restaurants that do stir fries. The atmosphere is not fancy, simple and small layout. I personally don’t care about atmosphere when it comes to eating food, but if you care about that, it will not be good choice for you.
