A 25-year-old chef's izakaya, in the Josefstadt space that a three-hood Japanese restaurant once held
SAN opened on Florianigasse in May 2026, in the space that had housed Sakai, a Japanese restaurant that closed in 2025 after holding three Gault&Millau toques for over a decade. Twenty-five-year-old chef Kevin Chen built SAN around the izakaya format: many small dishes brought to the table to share rather than a fixed sequence of courses.
The menu combines familiar Japanese small plates like edamame, kimchi, and scallion pancakes with Austrian ingredients, running to inventions like a udon carbonara that borrows from Italian technique. SAN is open Wednesday to Sunday, 11:30am to 11pm.

Need a break from schnitzel? Check out San for Austrian food with a twist. San is a fusion restaurant blending Japanese and Austrian flavours that pack a punch. Each dish is delicately presented, clearly explained and full of flavour. Stand outs were the Suzuki ceviche, scallion pancake and Hatsu Katsu Tataki. Service was excellent- attentive but never intrusive and ready to provide wine pairing suggestions. It’s in a great neighbourhood so an after dinner stroll takes you past significant Viennese sites.

The service was amazing, but the food was not to the expectations, especially for the price. The egg plant was too oily and not really tasty and the pancakes were mostly burned. The chicken skew was delicious tho, along with the mushrooms

This is a fantastic new fusion cuisine restaurant! We were four persons who shared many dishes and every one was inventive and delicious. There is an excellent selection of cocktails, wines, and sakes. Our server, a young woman from Germany, was super nice and knowledgeable. It is clear that the owners are creative chefs who have created a special restaurant in every respect. This is not a tourist trap, it is a real restaurant for eating and drinking exceptionally well.

Absolutely wonderful restaurant, extremely creative in their dishes and flawlessly executed with each one. Our waitress was also amazingly kind, the ambience of the place was delightful! Menu highlights for me were the amberjack, the char siu ribs, and the emoji mushrooms, but I don't think you could go wrong with anything they have on there.

SAN 三 has given this corner of Florianigasse such a lovely flair. Especially in summer, you see the owners outside, bringing life to the street, greeting people, and even creating the loveliest little “Tankstelle” for dogs: a small bowl of treats, fresh water, and a flower. The interior is monochrome, and has a beautiful little counter and four seats. I really love the atmosphere it creates. Yet, I haven’t eaten here yet. Sometimes I like to observe a place before fully experiencing it, before is the right night. Thank you, SAN 三, Mark & Kevin for bringing such a unique feeling to the neighbourhood.
