Live-fire cooking traced along the old spice routes
Muhājir is the newest restaurant from the chef behind Lilac Tiger, Coach House, Mirra and Mariela. It opened on North Clark Street in July 2026, built around a single idea: migration. Dishes pulled from the Middle East, South Asia, North Africa and the Mediterranean, all cooked over live fire.
The name means migrant, and the menu follows the old spice routes rather than any one national cuisine. Service runs Wednesday to Sunday only. The Filipino bar Bobo sits next door, under the same roof.
Good to know
- Open Wednesday to Sunday, 5pm to 10pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

Words fall short to describe this meal but here goes an attempt. This was, without exaggeration, the best meal of my life thus far. My husband and I have had Chef Zubair’s cooking for years and it’s always been phenomenal but this was…special. We asked chef to bring us whatever he recommended and he started with the most interesting first bite - an incredible hamachi crudo with a fast follow of the thaali with interesting spreads inspired by a multitude of regions and the freshest heirloom tomato and peach salad. We then had the prawns and branzino followed by the most perfect beef cheek nihari. As South Asians, we’re quick to judge household staples like nihari and this one did. Not. Disappoint. Chef absolutely nailed the classic flavors while dialing up the volume with the tenderness from the beef cheek. The black garlic naan was also absolutely insane. Our final savory course (yes we came hungry and yes we were stuffed by this point and yes we still wanted more) was the duck experience and good God what an experience it was. The skin was so crispy and delicious and the flavors so warm that it was the best bear hug you’ll ever get during a meal (or otherwise). Despite having a sweet tooth I never usually order dessert after such a heavy meal but I had to see what chef had on the menu and we finished our meal with an unbelievable palette cleanser consisting of white chocolate, strawberry, and pistachio. I’m not one to gush about anything really and find people that say “this moved me to tears” quite contrived but…tears were had. This entire meal was something special and honestly I feel privileged to have been able to experience it. Enjoy the pics! #NotAI #IMissItAlready #YayLeftovers

Had a great birthday dinner at Chef Zubair Mohajir’s new restaurant in their opening first weeks. They have already shined with Wazwan, Coach House, Mirra, & Lilac Tiger so this restaurant was already smooth from the start. Very professional service and great cocktails to start. They have a secret speakeasy in the back of the restaurant called BOBO’s which is great for pre or post dinner drinks. The menu is designed as a taste of the Spice Road and the Thaali starter has a great variety of flavors with mango pickle, eggplant dip, fava bean spread, and goat cheese dip - all had a unique Indian twist with papadam and focaccia. There was a great variety of vegetarian, seafood, and meat dishes (all Halal) that were all hits. Probably the only critique is that the servings were a bit small for shared plates so you need to order a lot. They were very sweet with a personalized card and dessert with a candle to celebrate the birthday. Fun location on Clark Street in Lincoln Park next to the Wiener’s Circle, Chef Zubair himself was there personally welcoming us as well. Overall great experience.

We sat in BoBo the speakeasy, it was such great vibes, dim lights and neon signs made it so fun and intimate. Exceptional food, truly blown away by the sizzling duck sisig. Amazing drinks menu and the bar staff is incredibly knowledgeable about the mixology… 5/5 great girls night out, shoutout to Katie our fave bartender 🫶 get yourself a postcard on the way out !!!!

This is the type of restaurant that stretch of Lincoln Park needed. I’ve followed chef Zubair to eat at all his new spaces and the food always sings. In its first week, things were off to a good start. Ambiance, wonderful lead server, and some exciting dishes on a tight dinner menu. The must try: The tomato and achar dish. Immediately delicious. The mussels in that fantastic curry broth with the herbed and oiled focaccia. Stunning. The off-menu milk cake dessert with a saffron sauce. WOW. Minor quibbles: The goat biryani shared the chef’s vision for biryani from Coach House to Mirra to here. However *very* little meat was in the actual rice and for $42, I was expecting meat. I doubt there was even 0.5 oz of meat in it. What I got was a lot of bone that I had to pull out of my mouth and pile on my plate. I won’t be ordering that again, not for that price. Service felt rushed. We were pressured to clear our plates because the kitchen had the next dishes ready. Pacing front and back of house needs to slow down. Six dishes including dessert and a cocktail and we’re already paying in barely an hour. That’s way too quick to properly enjoy each dish. I’m sure that’ll adjust as the team gets used to the flow. There’s a lot of promise here. Zubair clearly knows how to make great food and run a smart team. Excited to see how Muhajir shapes up and if the menu evolves.

Muhajir was absolutely amazing! The food was delicious, and our server, Steve, was wonderful—friendly, attentive, and made the experience even better. They also have excellent vegetarian options. We will definitely be coming back. Highly recommended!
