Chop Suey Lounge & Ginger Roots
San Diego Opens December 2026
The 1931 Pekin Cafe sign lights up again in December 2026
Chop Suey Lounge & Ginger Roots takes over the North Park space the Fong family opened as The Pekin Cafe in 1931 and held onto through decades of closure, waiting for the right tenant. Jacquelyn Kelly and Jason Bess got it. Kelly spent eight years at CH Projects, most of it running rooms.
Two concepts under one roof: an open lounge up front, a private chef's table tasting counter called Ginger Roots in the back. Opening is set for December 2026, which means the landmark neon comes back on with it. The red booths are reportedly staying.
