Bangkok boat noodles on Spring Garden Lane
Order in rounds, not one big bowl. That's the boat noodle way: small servings of dark, richly spiced broth, the format Bangkok vendors used to ladle out from canal boats. Thong Smith keeps it intact on Spring Garden Lane, pork blood and offal included for anyone going traditional.
The spot sits in Wan Chai's older commercial grid, a short walk from the Gloucester Road towers, where wet-market stalls have held their ground against redevelopment. Boat noodles are still rare in Hong Kong's Thai food scene, which runs mostly on tom yum and pad thai.

Came here today around 2pm for a late lunch with 2 friends. Great vibes, great food, great service. Vibes: We got a table next to the full glass wall and in the hot summer day in HK, it was a bit warm, but doable. My friend said reminds her the temperature in Thailand! The space between tables is good, unlike other shops in Wanchai where it is tight and elbow to elbow. Food They are flavorful, think adjusted to HK taste (reduced salt). We ordered the below: - chives cake: MUST order! Definitely a surprise for us. It's chewy and the chives taste stands out. Not oily at all. - my personal favorite among these dishes we ordered. - fried squid - MUST order if you like seafood. Thin batter, fresh crispy squid with light spicy dip. - pork jowl som tum (pork neck & pork skin) - the pork neck is delicious and moist with a light scent of char grill. The side papaya salad is refreshing with the right level of spice and fish sauce. The portion of sticky rice is just the right balance. - this is one of my friends' favorite dish among our order this time. - fish sauce cabbage - MUST order! It's so flavourful, they added some crispy fishes on top to contrast the texture. If I can choose another favorite dish from our order this time, this would be my 2nd. - ka prao beef rice (fried beef rice with egg) - the proportion of beef and rice is just perfect. The egg is done perfectly with runny yoke and crispy egg white sides. I was never a fan of fried rice, but I have to say this taste really good! This is my other friend's favorite dish today. - chicken wings - this is good flavour but have to say no surprise among all the other dishes in our order today. - steamed bread with pandan custard - the pandan custard is with coconut. You will love this dish if you like pandan and coconut. I don't usually eat dessert, but I ate so much of this! This is highly approved by my Malaysian friend. Service The service is great by Caelle and his team (Enso and Joy). I have a fatal allergy and that ingredient is used in many Thai dishes. Caelle checked with the chef twice on each of the dish we order to ensure there is none of that ingredient. Definitely will come back! I saw there are some reviews about the negative reviews in other post about temperature and the ambiance of the place... Hong Kong is very hot these few days as with the glass windows it will be warm in the shop, which is NATURAL! also, the vibe of the place is Thailand market, which is supposed to be hot... The concept of the shop is traditional Thai cuisine not Thai fine-dining please have your expectation set correctly.

Visited weekday opening time, arrived few minutes before opening and there’s already a queue. Food is flavourful and tastes authentic

Arrived before twelve, and there are already queue there. Waited for more than thirty mins after ordering, however, the boat noodles does tastes quite good. The broth is standard, but the beef is very tender even better than the other boat noodle shops. The meat balls are bouncy, the noodle is smooth, overall ingredients are in good quality. The fried pad Thai tastes ok but too spicy. The Thai milk tea is way too sweet that I pulled two cups of water to dilute it.

ThongSmith Boat Noodle were on another level — the soup was rich, tasty, and fresh, and I loved that you could refill the noodles. Considering the quality of the noodles and ingredients, the price felt very reasonable. The pomelo salad had a nice kick to it, with different layers of flavour that made every bite interesting. For dessert, the classic mango sticky rice was given an updated twist with fresh coconut and tiny Thai bananas, which really elevated the whole experience. The coconut milk custard pudding was also a perfect ending to my little Thai food journey. It wasn’t overly sweet, and I could really taste the fragrant pandan and coconut flavours. I absolutely loved it. The paper ordering form was a little confusing. Some parts of the format and the font size were quite small and difficult to understand at first, especially for first-time visitors. Thankfully, one of your staff members, Nana, was very friendly and helpful, which made the experience much smoother. Her service was greatly appreciated. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience, especially for such a short visit to the restaurant.
