An izakaya on King Street built for sharing

Skip the single-entree mindset. Shokudô runs on izakaya logic, small plates meant to accompany drinks and get passed around the table rather than eaten solo. It landed on Charleston's best new restaurants list going into 2026, alongside Ok Donna and Kultura.

The name translates loosely to "eating hall," a plainer, more communal idea than Charleston's fine-dining Japanese spots usually go for. The room is built around that same informality.

We had a lovely night at Shokudô. We got the curry, the veggie ramen, and the Shaka Shaka fries. The fries were great and super filling. The veggie ramen was very thick. The noodles were really good and cooked to the perfect texture. The bowl was mostly noodles, and didn’t have much else, which was interesting for the veggie ramen. The curry was a dark Japanese curry with fried fish. It was a lot of rice and less curry sauce than I expected, but the flavor was good. The fish was cooked very well, and it combined in an interesting way that I wasn’t expecting. Overall the food was good, but not exceptional. The menu has a lot of options in interested in, and I’m sure that when I go back, at least one will wow me. It was very filling and made the price pretty reasonable for the amount we got. Especially the ramen was great value. Our server was Tyniyah, and she was lovely! She was very attentive to dietary restrictions and always came around with water and recommendations when we needed it. I would absolutely go back and I definitely will to try out the rest of the menu!

Absolutely Fantastic Find — Shokudô is Now Our Family Favorite! We popped into Shokudô on a Sunday evening with our young family and no reservation, and they happily accommodated us right away. From the second we walked in, the staff was an absolute joy. They were incredibly attentive, cheerful, and clearly working as a seamless team. They were running food, expertly finishing and plating dishes, answering every question with a smile, and genuinely making sure every single one of us had an amazing experience. The Sunday vibe was perfect too! A live DJ was spinning chill 45s of down-tempo lounge music that created such a relaxed yet lively atmosphere. It felt special without being stuffy. The whole family loved it. But the food, wow, it was next-level delightful. Every ingredient felt thoughtfully chosen and everything was prepared with such meticulous care. We started with the Chisai (Small Flight) — one of each skewer — and it was such a pleasant taste journey. Each one had its own unique, delectable flavor. Our kids especially devoured the Kamo Tsukune duck meatballs, the juicy Toro Beef short rib, and the beautiful Gindara black cod skewers. The whole table went crazy for the “Shaka Shaka” Yuca Fries. The fun tableside preparation made it even better! Mid-course we also enjoyed the Spicy Maguro and Hamachi Temaki hand rolls. The presentation was a nice touch of class. The sautéed Aona bok choy was cooked perfectly with a lovely sauce that had just the right touch of chili. Flavorful but not too hot. We finished the savory courses with the OG Ramen. The rich, slow-cooked broth and tender pork chashu were outstanding. To cap off the night we enjoyed a beautifully balanced jasmine tea served in a proper teapot alongside the incredible Passionfruit Cheesecake Parfait. They even surprised us with Japanese shaved ice (not on the menu) as a special treat. It was so refreshing and delightful! We’re so glad we discovered Shokudô. The food, service, and vibe were all perfect. It’s definitely going to become our new regular family spot. Highly, highly recommend!

Shokudo is a must try! Top notch food that is reasonably affordable. Located on King right by the visitor center parking lot, walk right over into a fresh modern vibe. Notice the dry aging cooler full of fish - interesting! The aroma in the place is intoxicating. We ordered a mess of things all were rich and filling. First course were the bok choy, shaka shaka fries, and the daily mushroom. All were delicious and easily sharable. Then the duck and lamb skewers. These were something special, particularly the lamb. Lastly was the OG ramen and the crab rice. Ramen is some of the best in Charleston. At $16, this is a steal. Rice is good, a tad salty but solid. We left absolutely stuffed with takaways, 3 cocktails at $150 (pre-tip. We would have been perfectly full and without booz could have gotten the bill sub $100. For top tier, super rich, high end food in Charleston this is an absolute steal. What is notable about the menu is there is something for everyone on the menu. Unique!

My husband and I visited Charleston to celebrate my birthday, and if I could give more than five stars, I absolutely would. Chef Masa’s newest venture is truly a must-visit. The artistic presentation and impeccable service made the evening unforgettable. Standout dishes included the Jingisukan lamb kushiyaki and Kinoko, while the crudo and beef dumplings were exceptional. The Shaka Shaka fries were a fun and unique touch, as was the apple pie—but the true highlight was the miso caramel soft serve affogato. As someone born in Japan, I felt especially grateful to experience the chef’s creations on such a special occasion!

We came here for dinner with reservations, and the host took us directly to our table. The restaurant was a bit loud, and the lighting was on the dim side, so it was a little hard to read the menu good thing we can use our phone's flash light. Our server, Chris, was knowledgeable about the menu and often checked on us to make sure everything was good. The food came pretty quickly, and we didn’t feel rushed. This place offers a variety of Japanese dishes. For dinner, we had wagyu gyoza (with handmade dumpling skins), the hand roll A5 beef tartare, Otoro 25 (which we highly recommend), karaage chicken, which was okay but a bit flavorless, uni toastettes, and the must-order Nagoya mazesoba ramen noodles, which were cooked perfectly to my preference. We also had the shaved ice, which was very refreshing and delicious, and the masa apple pocket (I don’t remember the exact name, but it looked like a hot pocket). Dinner and drinks added up quickly because most of the dishes were tapas-sized, with the exception of the ramen. Overall, it’s worth visiting for a date-night kind of dinner.
