The Jibarito Stop

Chicago's own sandwich, relocated downtown
The Jibarito Stop began as a food truck, then opened a Pilsen storefront on 18th Street in 2015, and became one of the better-known places in the city for the jibarito, the plantain-bread sandwich invented in Humboldt Park. A fire closed the Pilsen shop in late 2025.
Co-owner Ana Rodriguez reopened in the Loop in spring 2026, at Wabash and Benton, a block from the elevated tracks. Jibaritos come full or half size. The menu also carries mofongos, vegan versions, and a chopped cheese served on pan sobao.

Fist time eating here. I ordered 4 alcapurias (they added yucca blah) Pinon (was good) carne frita meal (was good just very small portions or rice and meat), pastellio (was good just very small) You can only order at kiosk which sucks. I wouldn't eat here again just because.

First time visiting a Puerto Rican restaurant, so this was a new experience for me. I had a half order of vegan jibarito. It included a side of white rice and beans (beans not shown in the photo). I also ordered a glass of parcha (passion fruit juice) for a drink. It was all very good. My dining companion had carne frita mofongo, which he said was also very good. This will be on our list of places to eat when we go into the city. Definitely will be back.

I enjoyed the veg jibarito. The tostones were excellent and the white rice and beans very tasty. I am not from PR so I cannot comment on authentic flavors. They have put lots of care an attention to the new site. I hope it does well. I might suggest for those eating in the restaurant you offer real silverware and skip the plastic.

I stopped by The Jibarito Stop in downtown and ordered the 1/2 pork jibarito sandwich with arroz con gandules and a Kola-Champagne. Everything was outstanding! The pork was incredibly juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The jibarito itself was fresh and packed with flavor, and the arroz con gandules was the perfect side. The Kola-Champagne brought it all together. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a sandwich this good. Every bite reminded me why Puerto Rican food is so special. If you’re looking for an authentic and delicious meal, The Jibarito Stop is definitely worth a visit. I’ll be coming back for more!
