Waldorf Astoria New York

Eight years, two billion dollars, and it's finally back

The Waldorf Astoria shut its doors in 2017 for one of the longest, most expensive hotel renovations in American history. Eight years and a reported two billion dollars later, the 1931 Art Deco landmark reopened on July 15, 2025 with room count slashed from 1,400 to 375. None run smaller than 570 square feet.

Pierre-Yves Rochon did the interiors. Peacock Alley is back with Cole Porter's original piano, Gramercy Tavern's Michael Anthony runs the Lex Yard brasserie, and there's a kaiseki-influenced counter called Yoshoku plus a 30,000-square-foot Guerlain spa. Most of the old upper floors are condos now, which is what actually paid for all of it.

Good to know

  • Peacock Alley is open to non-guests and still has Cole Porter's piano; go for a drink even if you're not staying.
  • Lex Yard, Michael Anthony's brasserie, takes reservations separately from the hotel.

We had a recent experience at the NY Waldorf which was well below the standard we’ve come to expect . My husband and I have come to love the property, and it has become our go-to for NYC. The Peacock bar is a beautiful place for a pre-dinner cocktail or a nightcap, and we have always found the staff to be professional and service oriented. The concierge service sets an industry gold standard. My last visit unfortunately was a disappointment, and it was perhaps our most important visit. It was a small gathering amongst family and friends to celebrate my sister’s upcoming wedding. While not a “bachelorette party”, we had made some nice plans for dinners and rooftop bars in the city. When we checked in - we were told our room was not ready. The manager on duty - Noah - informed us it should be ready soon. As the hours passed, all the way until 6 pm - still without being able to check in, and get ready for our evening - we got the feeling Noah was just “blowing smoke”. We wished for a more candid assessment at our arrival - such that we could have planned around the fact that our suite was still not ready more than 2 hours after check in time. I’ll add that prior and during the visit, the concierge staff did live up to its usual excellence - and helped us make plans on many fronts. We are hopeful that the next time we stay, we can have our room available in a timely manner, and receive honest assessments from management if issues do occur.

The Waldorf Astoria is, by far, my favorite hotel in New York City. Its location is unbeatable, the lobby is absolutely stunning, and the level of hospitality is second to none. A special thank you to Robert, the Sales Manager, who is one of the most professional, respectful, and genuinely hospitable people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. His attention to detail and warm welcome make every stay even more memorable. The rooms are consistently spotless, and I love how thoughtfully designed they are. The modern technology—such as the automatic curtains that open and close at the touch of a button—adds both luxury and convenience, a feature that many other five-star hotels still lack. Throughout the hotel, staff members are always attentive, proactively offering directions and checking whether guests need anything. My only recommendation for future guests is to request a room that does not face Park Avenue if you’re a light sleeper. Traffic noise and occasional honking can be heard from those rooms. Other than that, every stay has been exceptional, and I look forward to returning.

I’d been here for dinner a few times before, but this was our first stay. The room was absolutely beautiful, elegant and luxurious, yet warm and comfortable at the same time. It felt more like a high-end residence than a hotel. I think it’s a style many women would especially appreciate. The bathroom was lovely, and I really enjoyed the toiletries as well. The housekeeping staff were wonderful whenever I requested amenities. The front desk was New York, haha. The gym was modern and stylish, with a long, open layout. I’d definitely love to stay here again!

I was very happy to be staying at the original Waldorf Astoria after such a prolonged closure. The renovations were definitely a significant and much needed improvement over its former self. The quality of the materials used for the hard product were top notch, no skimping whatsoever. My companion and I arrived around 11:00, arriving by a side entrance. Within seconds, an associate appeared and took our luggage, instructing us on how to best reach the Front Desk. Once there, the junior suite we’d been assigned was still occupied, but Aileen, the very personable FDA, assured us they would service the suite as soon as the previous guests checked-out. We stored our luggage and I ran some chores in there city while my companion caught up with some work while enjoying a few espressos in the gorgeous Peacock Alley. Upon returning, a few hours later, I joined my guest and we headed to our 14th floor lodgings. We were very impressed. It was furnished and decorated to a high standard, sophisticated and elegant in what I considered to be a true NYC Upper West Side style. It was warm and comfortable, more like an upscale studio apartment than a sterile hotel room, minus the kitchen, of course. Fit and finish were pristine, even the entrance door was like a piece of furniture with its mirror polish and accent trim. The size was generous, given that it was a junior suite, and the strategically populated bookshelves and artwork added to the cultured residential vibe. The bedroom featured the modern conveniences that today’s connected traveller requires, namely strategically placed AC and USB connectivity. An iPad on the desk served as a command center that controlled the HVAC, blinds, lighting as well as guest services such as room service. The bathroom was spacious, and featured both a tub and an adjacent separate shower, but not within a dedicated stall. The water pressure and temperature were consistent. Throughout our brief, one night stay, every staff member with whom we engaged was friendly, professional, and solicitous, whether it was at the front desk, housekeeping, the main entrance, or one of the F&B venues. We were made to feel welcome and our patronage appreciated. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Lex Yard as well as breakfast at Peacock Alley. The quality of the ingredients, the service and ambiance was excellent. Actually, there were really no disappointments or missteps during our stay. While it is admittedly a splurge, I wouldn’t hesitate to stay again, if only for a special occasion or event. It’s nice to find a peaceful oasis and be pampered within the usual frenetic activity of Manhattan. I’ve stayed at dozens of hotels in the city over the decades, a number of them in the luxury category, and the Waldorf is currently at the top of my list. I can honestly say this is the only one that got things 100% right.

From the moment we arrived, what struck us most was the remarkable level of service delivered by every member of your team. Each interaction carried the same sense of genuine hospitality, elegance, and attentiveness that has defined the Waldorf Astoria legacy for generations. The pride and care invested in every detail of the guest experience are unmistakable. Having spent a significant part of my own career in hospitality, I have been fortunate to experience many wonderful properties across the world. Yet I must say that the level of service we encountered during our stay stands among the finest I have ever experienced. It is both inspiring and humbling and truly represents the standard our entire industry should continuously strive to achieve. Equally impressive is the extraordinary work that has been accomplished through the restoration of this iconic property. Walking through the hotel brought back vivid memories of my youth, when visiting the Waldorf Astoria left me convinced it was indeed the “Greatest of them all”. What has now been achieved through this remarkable renaissance makes it feel as though the Waldorf Astoria has rightfully reclaimed that title once again. I would also like to extend a very special mention to Gentiana, who was truly a coup de cœur during our stay. Her warmth, professionalism, and sincere attentiveness left a lasting impression and perfectly embodied the spirit of hospitality that makes the Waldorf Astoria so special. Please extend my warmest congratulations and gratitude to everyone involved in bringing this new chapter of the Waldorf Astoria to life. Experiencing such dedication and excellence was a privilege.
